Not Recording

Google Nest Smart Doorbell

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Nest Doorbell clips are only saved to the cloud with an active Google Home Aware (formerly Nest Aware) subscription. Without a subscription, you get only a 3-hour event history. Check your subscription status in the Google Home app under Account > Payments.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd gen)
  • Google Nest Doorbell (Battery)

Common Causes

  • Google Home Aware subscription lapsed or free trial ended
  • Event history full — oldest clips deleted automatically
  • Recording disabled in Google Home settings
  • Doorbell offline during the event — no connection, no recording
  • Notification and recording settings toggled off

How to Fix It

  1. Check your subscription status.

Open the Google Home app and tap Account > Subscriptions (or Payments). Google Home Aware provides 30 days or 60 days of event history depending on the plan. Without an active subscription, only a 3-hour event snapshot is retained.

  2. Confirm recording is enabled.

In Google Home, tap the doorbell, then Settings > Video History. Make sure recording is set to On. Also check that the doorbell was online at the time of the missed event — an offline doorbell cannot record.

  3. Check notification and event settings.

Open Settings > Notifications and confirm Visitor, Motion, and Package alerts are all enabled. Events are only recorded when the corresponding trigger type is enabled.

  4. Review the event history tab.

In the Google Home app, tap the doorbell and open the History tab. Clips are listed in reverse chronological order. If the event is not there, the doorbell may have been offline at the time.

  5. Check for local storage on older models.

Older Nest Hello doorbell models support a Nest Aware Plus plan with local backup. For current Nest Doorbell models, all storage is cloud-based — there is no microSD slot.
