myQ Not Connecting

Chamberlain Garage Door Opener

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Chamberlain myQ not connecting is usually caused by the hub or smart opener being too far from the WiFi router, the router using 5GHz only (myQ requires 2.4GHz), or the myQ account session expiring. Ensure your garage has 2.4GHz WiFi coverage and re-login to the myQ app.

Affected Models

  • Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Hub
  • Chamberlain B970
  • Chamberlain B6765
  • LiftMaster 8500W
  • LiftMaster 84501R

Common Causes

  • Weak WiFi signal in the garage — common when the router is in the house
  • Router broadcasting 5GHz only — myQ requires 2.4GHz
  • myQ app session expired — requires re-authentication
  • myQ cloud service outage (temporary)
  • Firmware update in progress — device temporarily offline

How to Fix It

  1. Check WiFi signal strength in the garage.

Stand in your garage near the opener and test WiFi speed on your phone. If the signal is weak (1 bar) or drops out, the myQ device cannot maintain a reliable connection. A WiFi extender placed in the garage or in the room closest to the garage resolves the majority of myQ offline problems.

  2. Confirm 2.4GHz WiFi is available.

myQ devices connect only to 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router is in 5GHz-only mode, enable 2.4GHz. If your router uses a combined band (same SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz), the myQ should connect to 2.4GHz automatically — but if band steering is aggressive, you may need a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID.

  3. Sign out of the myQ app and back in.

Open the myQ app, go to Settings > Account, and sign out. Sign back in with your Chamberlain account credentials. An expired session token causes the app to show the device as offline even when the device itself has a working internet connection.

  4. Restart the myQ hub or opener.

Unplug the myQ Smart Garage Hub (or the smart opener power cord) for 30 seconds. Plug back in and allow 2 minutes for the device to reconnect. The myQ LED should flash then go solid when it has re-established its cloud connection.

  5. Check the myQ status page for outages.

Chamberlain myQ occasionally has cloud service outages. Visit status.myq.com (or search 'myQ status') to check whether the service is experiencing issues. If there is a reported outage, wait for Chamberlain to resolve it — no action on your device is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Chamberlain myQ work without internet?

The physical remote controls and wall button work without internet — the motor itself does not need connectivity. The myQ app and remote monitoring require an active internet connection at both the garage device and your phone. Smartphone control, notifications, and schedule features all require cloud connectivity.

Why does my myQ show the door as open when it is closed?

The myQ door sensor uses an accelerometer to detect door movement. An incorrect open/closed status usually means the sensor was installed on the wrong section of the door, or was knocked out of its calibrated position. In the myQ app, go to Garage Door > Settings > Door Sensor > Recalibrate to reset the sensor's closed position.
