Calibration Error
Ecobee Smart Thermostat
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ecobee is showing a temperature that doesn't match how your home actually feels. This is almost always a placement or calibration issue — not a hardware fault. Here's how to fix it.
Affected Models
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
- Ecobee3 Lite
- Ecobee4
Common Causes
- The thermostat is installed near a vent, window, or exterior wall that skews readings
- The temperature correction (offset) setting in the app is set incorrectly
- The thermostat is picking up heat from inside the wall (from HVAC wiring)
- Room sensors are averaging temperature from cold or unused rooms
- The thermostat has not finished its initial calibration after installation
How to Fix It
-
On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Settings > Installation Settings > Thresholds > Temperature Correction.
You can offset the reading by up to plus or minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a reliable thermometer to compare.
-
Make sure the thermostat is not installed directly above or below an air vent.
Vents blow hot or cold air directly at the thermostat, causing wildly inaccurate readings.
-
Check that the wall cavity behind the thermostat is sealed with insulation foam.
Cold outdoor air or hot duct air can leak through the wall opening and affect the sensor. Use foam sealant around the wires.
-
Review which room sensors are being used in each comfort profile.
If a sensor in an unoccupied cold room is included, it will drag the average temperature down. Exclude it from the active profile.
-
Wait 30 minutes after any change to the thermostat settings before judging the temperature reading.
The Ecobee averages temperature over time to avoid rapid fluctuations. Immediate readings may not reflect the steady-state value.
When to Call a Professional
If you consistently get readings that are 5 or more degrees off and nothing corrects it, contact Ecobee Support. In rare cases, the internal temperature sensor can fail and need replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Ecobee temperature sensor?
Ecobee claims plus or minus 1 degree Fahrenheit accuracy. In practice, placement has the biggest impact on accuracy. A well-placed thermostat in an interior hallway will read most accurately.
My Ecobee reads 2 degrees warmer than my other thermometer. Is that normal?
A small difference is common and can be corrected with the Temperature Correction offset. Set the offset to -2 and the thermostat will adjust all readings accordingly. Go to Main Menu > Settings > Installation Settings > Thresholds.
Can Ecobee room sensors help with temperature accuracy?
Yes — this is one of the main reasons to use room sensors. You can tell Ecobee to base heating and cooling on the rooms you actually use. This gives a much more accurate and comfortable result than relying on the thermostat alone.
