Cooling Not Working
Ecobee Smart Thermostat
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ecobee is not turning on your air conditioner. This is often a settings issue or a problem with the AC unit itself. Check these steps before calling a technician.
Affected Models
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
- Ecobee3 Lite
- Ecobee4
Common Causes
- The thermostat mode is set to Heat or Off instead of Cool
- The set temperature is not lower than the current room temperature
- The AC outdoor unit has tripped a circuit breaker
- The AC system needs a refrigerant recharge — a job for a professional
- The Ecobee has a wiring issue preventing it from signalling the AC unit
How to Fix It
-
On the Ecobee, confirm the system mode is set to 'Cool' — not 'Heat', 'Auto', or 'Off'.
Tap the mode icon on the home screen. Auto mode should also work, but manually setting Cool is the quickest test.
-
Set the desired temperature at least 3 degrees below the current room temperature.
If the room is 76F and you set the target to 76F, the AC will not turn on. Try setting it to 72F.
-
Check the circuit breaker box for the AC unit — it may have tripped.
AC units have their own dedicated breaker. Reset it if it has tripped, then wait 5 minutes before testing.
-
Go outside and check the AC condenser unit. Look for ice buildup, debris, or a tripped reset button.
Some AC units have a manual reset button on the side. Press it if visible. Clear any leaves or debris around the unit.
-
On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Settings > Equipment to confirm cooling equipment is correctly configured.
An incorrect equipment setting means Ecobee is sending the wrong signal — or no signal at all — to your AC.
When to Call a Professional
If your AC unit makes grinding, banging, or hissing noises, turn it off immediately and call an HVAC technician. Refrigerant leaks and electrical faults in AC units require professional repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Ecobee say 'Cool On' but the AC never starts?
Ecobee is sending the signal but the AC isn't responding. Check the outdoor condenser unit for power and look for any fault indicators. A tripped breaker at the AC disconnect box is a very common culprit.
What is the Ecobee minimum cool temperature?
Ecobee will not allow you to set a cooling temperature below 45F (7C). This is a built-in safety limit to protect the AC system. For normal home cooling, set between 68F and 78F.
My AC runs but the house doesn't cool down. Is that an Ecobee problem?
No — if the AC is running, Ecobee is doing its job. The problem is with the AC system itself — possibly low refrigerant, a dirty filter, or a blocked condenser. Call an HVAC technician to inspect the AC unit.
