Heating Not Working
Ecobee Smart Thermostat
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ecobee thermostat is not turning on your heating system. This could be a thermostat setting, a wiring issue, or a furnace fault. Check these steps before calling a technician.
Affected Models
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
- Ecobee3 Lite
- Ecobee4
Common Causes
- The thermostat mode is set to Cool or Off instead of Heat
- The set temperature is not higher than the current room temperature
- A furnace error or tripped safety switch is preventing the heat from running
- The C-wire (common wire) is missing or loose, causing the thermostat to malfunction
- The Ecobee is reading the room temperature incorrectly due to a faulty sensor
How to Fix It
-
On the Ecobee, make sure the system mode is set to 'Heat' — not 'Cool', 'Auto', or 'Off'.
Tap the mode icon on the home screen to cycle through modes.
-
Set the desired temperature at least 3 degrees above the current room temperature.
If the room is 68F and you set the target to 68F, the heat will not turn on. Try setting it to 72F.
-
Go to the furnace and check its display or indicator lights for any error codes.
A flashing light on the furnace often means a fault code. Count the flashes and look up the code in the furnace manual.
-
Check the furnace power switch — it looks like a regular light switch near the unit.
Also check the circuit breaker for the furnace. Reset it if it has tripped.
-
On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Settings > Equipment to confirm the heating equipment is configured correctly.
If the wiring type or equipment type is set wrong, Ecobee won't send the right signal to your furnace.
When to Call a Professional
If your furnace shows error lights or makes unusual sounds, stop troubleshooting and call an HVAC technician. Gas furnace faults can be dangerous — do not attempt internal repairs yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Ecobee say 'Heat On' but the heat doesn't come on?
Ecobee may be sending the signal but the furnace is not responding. Check the furnace for error lights or a tripped safety switch. Also inspect the furnace filter — a clogged filter triggers an automatic safety shutoff.
What is a C-wire and does my Ecobee need one?
The C-wire is the common wire that gives the thermostat continuous power. Without it, Ecobee may behave erratically or not control the furnace properly. Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit to work without a C-wire in most systems.
How long does it take for heat to come on after I change the Ecobee setting?
Ecobee has a built-in compressor protection delay of about 5 minutes. This prevents rapid on-off cycling that can damage HVAC equipment. If nothing happens after 10 minutes, the issue is not a delay — follow the fix steps above.
