Low Battery

ecobee Smart Thermostat

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your ecobee is warning you that a battery is running low. This usually refers to an ecobee SmartSensor (room sensor) rather than the thermostat itself — the thermostat is powered by your HVAC wiring. Replacing the SmartSensor battery is a simple fix that takes about one minute.

Affected Models

  • ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
  • ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
  • ecobee3 lite
  • ecobee4
  • ecobee SmartSensor

Common Causes

  • An ecobee SmartSensor room sensor has a low or dead battery
  • The CR2032 coin cell battery in the SmartSensor has reached the end of its life (typically 18-24 months)
  • Extreme cold near the sensor location is draining the battery faster than normal
  • The thermostat itself is not receiving adequate power from the HVAC C-wire

How to Fix It

  1. In the ecobee app or on the thermostat, go to Main Menu > Sensors to identify which sensor is showing low battery.

The app will usually display the sensor name and a battery indicator. Note which room sensor needs attention.

  2. Locate the ecobee SmartSensor showing the low battery warning.

SmartSensors are small white puck-shaped devices usually mounted on a wall or shelf in various rooms.

  3. Gently press the tab on the back of the SmartSensor and slide it off its mounting bracket.

No tools are needed. The sensor snaps off the bracket easily.

  4. On the back of the sensor, open the battery compartment and replace the CR2032 coin cell battery.

CR2032 batteries are widely available at grocery stores, pharmacies, and hardware stores. Cost is usually under $2.

  5. Snap the sensor back onto its bracket and check the ecobee app or thermostat — the low battery warning should be gone.

It may take a minute for the sensor to reconnect and the warning to clear.

When to Call a Professional

If the thermostat shows power issues after replacing sensor batteries and checking the C-wire, contact ecobee support or an HVAC technician. A faulty transformer or missing C-wire may require professional wiring work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ecobee thermostat itself run on batteries?

No — the ecobee thermostat is powered by your HVAC system wiring (usually the C-wire). The low battery warning almost always refers to an ecobee SmartSensor room sensor, not the thermostat itself. The SmartSensor uses one CR2032 coin cell battery.

How long do ecobee SmartSensor batteries last?

ecobee SmartSensor batteries typically last 18 to 24 months under normal conditions. Batteries may drain faster if the sensor is in a very cold location or if it is checking in very frequently. ecobee will send a low battery notification in the app before the sensor goes completely offline.

What happens if I ignore the low battery warning on ecobee?

If the SmartSensor battery dies, that sensor goes offline and ecobee can no longer use it for temperature readings or occupancy detection. If ecobee was using that sensor to control temperature in a room, heating and cooling in that area may become less accurate. Replace the battery promptly to avoid comfort issues.
