Sensor Offline
Ecobee Smart Thermostat
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ecobee room sensor shows as offline or isn't being detected. This usually means a dead battery or a sensor that's too far from the thermostat. The fix is quick in most cases.
Affected Models
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
- Ecobee3 Lite
- Ecobee4
Common Causes
- The room sensor battery is dead or very low
- The sensor is too far from the Ecobee thermostat (range is about 45 feet)
- A thick wall, appliance, or metal object is blocking the signal
- The sensor was recently moved and needs to re-pair
- The sensor has a firmware issue or has become corrupt
How to Fix It
-
Replace the battery in the room sensor — it uses a CR2032 coin cell battery.
The sensor does not give much warning before the battery dies. A fresh battery fixes most offline issues.
-
Move the sensor closer to the Ecobee thermostat — ideally within 30 feet with no walls in between.
Each wall or floor the signal passes through reduces the effective range.
-
Remove the sensor from the Ecobee and re-pair it from scratch.
On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Sensors > Add Sensor and follow the prompts.
-
Remove the battery from the sensor for 30 seconds, then reinsert it.
This forces the sensor to restart and re-establish its connection to the thermostat.
-
Check for interference — microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors can disrupt the sensor signal.
Try moving the sensor away from any wireless electronics and test again.
When to Call a Professional
Ecobee room sensors are standalone accessories — no professional service is needed. If a replacement sensor is faulty out of the box, contact Ecobee Support for a warranty replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which room sensor is offline?
On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Sensors. Any sensor with a grey icon or marked 'Not Connected' is offline. The app also shows sensor status under the thermostat's detail screen.
How long does the Ecobee room sensor battery last?
The CR2032 battery typically lasts about 18 to 24 months. The Ecobee app will warn you when battery is low. Keep a spare CR2032 at home so you can replace it quickly.
Can I add more room sensors to my Ecobee?
Yes — Ecobee supports multiple room sensors. You can assign sensors to specific comfort profiles and schedules. Add them via Main Menu > Sensors > Add Sensor on the thermostat.
