Wi-Fi Connection Error

Ecobee Smart Thermostat

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Ecobee thermostat can't connect to your Wi-Fi network. This is usually caused by a password change, a weak signal, or a router setting. Follow the steps below to reconnect it.

Affected Models

  • Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
  • Ecobee SmartThermostat Enhanced
  • Ecobee3 Lite
  • Ecobee4

Common Causes

  • Your Wi-Fi password was recently changed
  • The thermostat is too far from the router for a stable signal
  • Your router uses 5 GHz only — Ecobee requires 2.4 GHz
  • Router security settings (like MAC filtering) are blocking the thermostat
  • A temporary network glitch dropped the connection

How to Fix It

  1. On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi.

Tap your network name and re-enter your Wi-Fi password.

  2. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

Wait 2 minutes, then try reconnecting the Ecobee.

  3. Log into your router and confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is enabled.

Ecobee does not support 5 GHz. If your router only broadcasts 5 GHz, the thermostat cannot connect.

  4. Check your router for MAC address filtering and whitelist the Ecobee if needed.

Find the Ecobee's MAC address under Settings > About on the thermostat.

  5. Move your router closer or add a Wi-Fi extender near the thermostat.

Thermostats are often installed in hallways far from routers. A weak signal causes frequent drops.

When to Call a Professional

If your Ecobee connects briefly then drops repeatedly, a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system may be needed. An HVAC technician is not required for Wi-Fi issues — contact Ecobee Support instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ecobee work without Wi-Fi?

Yes — Ecobee will still heat and cool your home without Wi-Fi. But you will lose remote control, scheduling, and smart features. Connect it to Wi-Fi to get full functionality.

Why does my Ecobee keep losing Wi-Fi connection?

Frequent drops usually mean a weak signal. Try adding a Wi-Fi extender near the thermostat. Also check if your router is rebooting on a schedule.

I changed my router. How do I reconnect my Ecobee?

On the Ecobee, go to Main Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi. Forget the old network, then select your new router and enter the password. The thermostat will reconnect within about 30 seconds.
