Cast Error
Amazon Fire Stick
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A cast or screen mirroring error on an Amazon Fire Stick means the device cannot establish or maintain a mirror connection from your phone, tablet, or PC. Fire Stick supports screen mirroring using Miracast technology — and errors happen when the two devices cannot find each other or maintain a stable wireless link. You may see messages like 'Unable to connect' or 'Mirroring failed' on your Fire Stick or the device you are casting from. Most cast errors are caused by Wi-Fi interference, device compatibility issues, or the Fire Stick not being in display mirroring mode.
Affected Models
- Amazon Fire TV Stick (all generations)
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max
- Fire TV Stick Lite
- Fire TV Cube
Common Causes
- The Fire Stick is not in Display Mirroring mode when the cast request is made
- The casting device (phone or PC) and Fire Stick are on different Wi-Fi networks or bands
- Wi-Fi interference from neighboring networks is disrupting the Miracast connection
- The phone or tablet does not fully support Miracast or screen mirroring
- The Fire Stick is too far from the casting device for a reliable direct wireless connection
How to Fix It
-
On the Fire Stick, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Enable Display Mirroring. The Fire Stick must be actively listening for a mirror connection before you initiate one from your phone.
The Fire Stick only accepts mirror connections when this mode is active — it does not passively wait for casts like Chromecast does.
-
On your Android phone or Windows PC, go to your screen mirroring or cast settings and select your Fire Stick from the list. The device name will match the name you gave your Fire Stick during setup.
On Android: Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Cast. On Windows 10/11: Action Center > Cast or Connect.
-
Ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Some routers have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with different names — make sure your phone and Fire Stick are connected to the same one.
Miracast uses a direct Wi-Fi peer-to-peer connection, but having both devices on the same network SSID helps with discovery.
-
Restart both the Fire Stick and your casting device. Unplug the Fire Stick from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Restart your phone or PC as well.
A restart clears any stale connection data that can prevent devices from discovering each other.
-
Move the Fire Stick and your casting device closer together. Miracast uses a direct wireless link — thick walls, distance, and other wireless devices all reduce reliability.
If possible, test in the same room with fewer obstacles between the two devices.
When to Call a Professional
Cast errors on Fire Stick are almost always user-resolvable. If screen mirroring consistently fails across multiple compatible devices, the Fire Stick may have a Wi-Fi hardware issue. Contact Amazon customer service at amazon.com/help or through the Alexa app for Fire TV support. Replacement Fire Sticks are inexpensive if the hardware is confirmed faulty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fire Stick support casting from iPhone or iPad?
Fire Stick's built-in screen mirroring uses Miracast, which Apple devices do not support. To mirror from an iPhone or iPad, you need the AirScreen app or a compatible app installed on the Fire Stick. Alternatively, many streaming apps (Netflix, YouTube, etc.) have their own cast button that works from iOS devices.
Is screen mirroring on Fire Stick the same as Casting?
They are similar but different. Screen mirroring (Miracast) duplicates everything on your device screen to the TV. Casting from apps like YouTube or Netflix sends the video stream directly to the Fire Stick — your phone acts as a remote control, not a mirror. Casting via app is usually higher quality and more reliable than full screen mirroring.
Can I mirror my laptop to Fire Stick?
Yes — Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs support Miracast screen mirroring to Fire Stick. Open Action Center (notification area, bottom right) and click Cast or Connect, then select your Fire Stick. Make sure Display Mirroring is enabled on the Fire Stick first.
