CAST_ERR_2

Amazon Fire Stick

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Fire Stick error CAST_ERR_2 means the screen mirroring or casting connection between your phone or tablet and the Fire Stick failed or was interrupted. This typically happens due to a Wi-Fi configuration issue — your phone and Fire Stick need to be on the same network for casting to work. It can also happen when the Fire Stick's display mirroring feature has a compatibility issue with your phone's casting protocol.

Affected Models

  • Fire TV Stick Lite
  • Fire TV Stick 4K
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max
  • Fire TV Cube
  • Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen)

Common Causes

  • Your phone and Fire Stick are connected to different Wi-Fi networks (such as 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz separate networks)
  • The Fire Stick's Display Mirroring feature is not enabled or was disabled by a settings change
  • A router Guest network is isolating your phone from the Fire Stick, preventing device-to-device communication
  • The Miracast or screen mirroring protocol on your Android phone is incompatible with the Fire Stick's implementation
  • Bluetooth or Wi-Fi interference is disrupting the casting connection during streaming

How to Fix It

  1. Enable Display Mirroring on the Fire Stick. Go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Enable Display Mirroring. You will see a waiting screen on your TV. Then initiate screen mirroring from your phone (usually in Quick Settings as 'Screen Mirror,' 'Smart View,' or 'Cast').

Display Mirroring must be actively enabled and waiting on the Fire Stick before you start casting from your phone. The Fire Stick does not automatically detect casting attempts.

  2. Confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. On the Fire Stick, check Settings > Network. On your phone, check Wi-Fi settings. Both must be on exactly the same network — the same SSID (network name). If your router uses different names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, make sure both devices are on the same band network.

This is the most common cause of CAST_ERR_2. Routers often broadcast two separate networks. If the Fire Stick is on '2.4G-Network' and your phone is on '5G-Network,' they cannot see each other even though they are on the same physical router.

  3. Check that your phone is not on the router's Guest Wi-Fi network. Guest networks intentionally isolate devices from each other for security. If you are on Guest Wi-Fi, switch to the main home Wi-Fi network and try casting again.

Guest networks are a common source of casting failures. They prevent device-to-device communication even on the same router — this is by design, but it breaks casting.

  4. Restart both the Fire Stick and your phone. On the Fire Stick: Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. On your phone: a normal power off and back on. After both are restarted, re-enable Display Mirroring on the Fire Stick and try casting again.

A full restart on both devices refreshes Miracast state and Wi-Fi connection details. This resolves many casting errors that persist despite correct settings.

  5. Try using the Amazon Fire TV app instead of native screen mirroring. Download the 'Amazon Fire TV' app on your phone from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. The app provides a more reliable casting experience than native Miracast, including content casting from supported streaming apps.

The Amazon Fire TV app uses a different casting protocol that is optimized for Fire TV devices. If Miracast is unreliable on your phone-router combination, the app is a more stable alternative.

When to Call a Professional

If casting never works from any device after confirming network settings are correct, the Fire Stick's Miracast hardware or software may have a fault. Contact Amazon support for diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mirror an iPhone to my Fire Stick?

Not natively — iPhones use Apple's AirPlay protocol, which is not supported by Fire Stick. Fire Stick uses Miracast, which is an Android and Windows standard. To mirror an iPhone to a Fire Stick, you need a third-party app — AirScreen is a popular option available in the Amazon Appstore. Install AirScreen on your Fire Stick, open it, and it will appear as an AirPlay receiver that your iPhone can connect to.

Why does casting disconnect randomly after a few minutes?

Random disconnections are usually caused by Wi-Fi instability or your phone's battery optimization settings. Some Android phones aggressively close background processes to save battery, which can interrupt the Miracast connection. Go to your phone's Battery settings and disable battery optimization for the screen casting or Wi-Fi feature. Also try moving both the phone and the Fire Stick closer to your router to strengthen the Wi-Fi signal.

What is Miracast and does my phone support it?

Miracast is a wireless display standard that lets you mirror your Android phone or Windows screen to compatible TVs and streaming devices. All Android phones running Android 4.2 or later support Miracast — though it is called different things by different manufacturers: Smart View (Samsung), Cast (Google Pixel), Screen Mirror (most others). Windows PCs support it through the Project (Windows Key + P) menu. Apple devices do not support Miracast — they use AirPlay instead.
