Connection Error 1

Amazon Fire TV Stick

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Connection Error 1 on a Fire Stick means the device cannot establish or maintain a Wi-Fi connection. This is a network error — your Fire Stick hardware is almost always fine. Restarting the Fire Stick and your router fixes it in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Fire TV Stick (all generations)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max
  • Fire TV Stick Lite
  • Fire TV Cube

Common Causes

  • Home Wi-Fi network is temporarily unavailable or the router has lost its connection
  • Wrong Wi-Fi password entered or the password was recently changed
  • Fire Stick is too far from the router and the signal is too weak
  • Router is on the 5GHz band only and the Fire Stick cannot connect at that frequency
  • Temporary software glitch preventing the Fire Stick from connecting

How to Fix It

  1. Restart your Fire Stick. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restart, or hold the Select button and the Play/Pause button simultaneously for 5 seconds. Wait for it to fully reboot before trying again.

A restart clears temporary software glitches that cause false connection errors.

  2. Restart your Wi-Fi router. Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully reconnect before testing the Fire Stick.

Router issues are one of the most common causes of Connection Error 1. Even if other devices seem fine, the router may have stopped issuing IP addresses correctly.

  3. On the Fire Stick, go to Settings > Network. Forget your current Wi-Fi network, then reconnect by selecting it again and re-entering your password carefully. Pay attention to uppercase and lowercase letters.

A recently changed router password is a very common cause — the Fire Stick will still try the old password until you update it.

  4. Check the Wi-Fi signal strength in Settings > Network. If the signal is 'Fair' or 'Poor', move your router closer to the Fire Stick or move the Fire Stick closer to the router. An HDMI extender cable can also help by moving the Fire Stick away from the TV.

Some TVs block Wi-Fi signals from HDMI ports. The included HDMI extender cable puts the Fire Stick in open air where it gets a better signal.

  5. If your router broadcasts both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with different names, try connecting the Fire Stick to the 2.4GHz network. It has a longer range and is more reliable for devices that move between rooms.

The 5GHz band is faster but has shorter range and is more affected by walls. The 2.4GHz band is slower but much more stable for home streaming devices.

When to Call a Professional

Connection Error 1 is always a software or network issue — no professional repair is needed. If every step fails, a factory reset of the Fire Stick will resolve nearly any software-related cause. Contact Amazon Fire TV support at amazon.com/firetvsupport if factory reset does not help.

Frequently Asked Questions

My other devices connect to Wi-Fi fine but my Fire Stick shows Connection Error 1 — why?

Other devices (phones, laptops) use more powerful Wi-Fi antennas and adapt better to weak signals. The Fire Stick has a smaller, less powerful antenna. Try moving the Fire Stick closer to the router, or using the included HDMI extender to get it out from behind the TV.

Will a factory reset fix Connection Error 1?

Yes — a factory reset resolves nearly all software-caused connection errors. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. Note that a factory reset erases all your apps, settings, and downloads. You will need to log back into your Amazon account and reinstall your apps.

Connection Error 1 appeared after I changed my Wi-Fi password — what do I do?

Go to Settings > Network on your Fire Stick. Select your Wi-Fi network and choose 'Forget Network'. Then reconnect and enter the new password. This is the most common cause of Connection Error 1 appearing suddenly.
