CONN_ERR_2

Amazon Fire Stick

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CONN_ERR_2 means your Fire Stick tried to connect to your Wi-Fi network but was rejected. The authentication step failed — the Fire Stick could not prove to your router that it belongs on the network. This usually means the Wi-Fi password saved on the Fire Stick is wrong or outdated. It can also mean a router setting is blocking the connection. The good news: this is almost always fixable without any technical knowledge.

Affected Models

  • Fire TV Stick (all generations)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max
  • Fire TV Cube
  • Fire TV Stick Lite

Common Causes

  • The Wi-Fi password was changed at the router but the Fire Stick still has the old password saved
  • The Fire Stick was set up with a different network and is now trying to connect to the wrong one
  • The router's MAC address filtering is blocking the Fire Stick's network adapter
  • The router has been reset to factory settings, changing the password or network name
  • The Fire Stick's stored network credentials have become corrupted and need to be re-entered

How to Fix It

  1. On the Fire Stick, go to Settings > Network. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and choose 'Forget This Network'. Then reconnect and enter your current Wi-Fi password carefully.

Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. If your password has numbers and capital letters, make sure to enter them exactly as they are. The on-screen keyboard can switch between uppercase and lowercase.

  2. Check the current Wi-Fi password on your router. The default password is usually printed on a sticker on the side or bottom of the router. If you changed it, use your new password.

If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password, you can find it on a Windows PC by going to Network settings, clicking your Wi-Fi network, and selecting 'Show password'. On a Mac, check Keychain Access.

  3. Restart your Wi-Fi router. Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully restart, then try connecting the Fire Stick again.

Router restarts clear temporary connection tables and can resolve authentication issues that are not related to the password at all. This fixes CONN_ERR_2 more often than you might expect.

  4. Check if your router has MAC address filtering enabled. If so, you need to add the Fire Stick's MAC address to the router's allowed list.

The Fire Stick's MAC address is found at Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network. Look for 'Wi-Fi MAC'. Your router's admin page (usually accessed at 192.168.1.1) shows the MAC filter settings.

  5. If none of the above work, factory reset the Fire Stick. Hold the Back button and the right side of the navigation ring simultaneously for 10 seconds. This clears all saved network settings.

A factory reset returns the Fire Stick to its out-of-box state. You will need to sign in with your Amazon account and re-download your apps afterward. Your Amazon purchases are not lost.

When to Call a Professional

CONN_ERR_2 almost never requires professional help. Work through the steps below — this is a network and settings issue you can fix yourself. If you are not sure of your Wi-Fi password, check the sticker on your router or modem. Contact Amazon Fire TV support at amazon.com/firetvsupport if none of the steps work.

Frequently Asked Questions

My password is correct but I still get CONN_ERR_2. What is wrong?

If you are certain the password is correct, the next most likely cause is a router-side issue. Try restarting the router first — this clears temporary authentication tables. Also check if your router has MAC address filtering enabled, which blocks unknown devices by default. Finally, try connecting the Fire Stick to a mobile hotspot from your phone — if that works, the problem is with your home router configuration.

Can CONN_ERR_2 be caused by my router being too far away?

Distance causes a different error — typically a weak signal or timeout, not an authentication failure. CONN_ERR_2 specifically means the Fire Stick reached the router but the login was rejected. If you are very far from the router, you may see CONN_ERR_2 followed by other connection errors. A Wi-Fi extender helps with range but will not fix an authentication error caused by a wrong password.

Will a factory reset delete my Amazon account from the Fire Stick?

Yes — a factory reset signs you out of your Amazon account and removes all settings. However, all your Amazon purchases, Prime Video access, and app licenses are stored in your Amazon account in the cloud. When you set the Fire Stick back up with your Amazon login, all your purchased content and apps are available to re-download. You do not lose anything you have bought.
