SIGN_ERR_1
Amazon Fire Stick
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
SIGN_ERR_1 means your Fire Stick failed to sign in to your Amazon account. The device could not authenticate with Amazon's servers — either because of a network problem, an incorrect password, or a temporary issue with Amazon's account servers. This error prevents you from using most Fire Stick features since almost everything requires an Amazon account. In most cases, this is a temporary connectivity issue and resolves with a restart or a re-entered password.
Affected Models
- Fire TV Stick (all generations)
- Fire TV Stick Lite
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max
- Fire TV Cube (all generations)
Common Causes
- The Fire Stick cannot reach Amazon's authentication servers due to a Wi-Fi or internet connection problem
- The Amazon account password was recently changed and the Fire Stick still has the old password
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled on the Amazon account and the confirmation step was missed
- Amazon's account servers are temporarily down or experiencing problems
- The Fire Stick's system clock is significantly wrong, which causes security certificate errors during sign-in
How to Fix It
-
Restart the Fire Stick. Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, choose Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. After the restart, try signing in again.
A restart refreshes the network connection and clears any temporary authentication errors. This resolves SIGN_ERR_1 in the majority of cases when the error appears suddenly.
-
Verify your Amazon account password. On a phone or computer, try logging in to amazon.com with your email and password. If you cannot log in, reset your password at amazon.com/password before returning to the Fire Stick.
A recently changed password is one of the most common causes of this error. The Fire Stick continues trying the old password until you update it.
-
Check your Wi-Fi connection on the Fire Stick. Go to Settings > Network and verify the Fire Stick is connected to your Wi-Fi. If not connected, reconnect to your network.
The Fire Stick must be connected to the internet to authenticate with Amazon's servers. Even brief Wi-Fi drops during sign-in will produce SIGN_ERR_1.
-
If two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled on your Amazon account, watch for a confirmation code sent to your phone or email during sign-in. Enter the code when prompted.
2FA adds a second sign-in step. If your Fire Stick is asking for a one-time code and you close the screen before entering it, the sign-in fails. Make sure your phone is nearby when signing in.
-
Deregister and re-register the device if the above steps fail. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Reset to Factory Defaults. After reset, sign in to your Amazon account during the setup process.
A factory reset clears all stored account credentials and forces a fresh sign-in. This is the most thorough fix for persistent SIGN_ERR_1 errors. You will need to reinstall apps and re-enter preferences afterward.
When to Call a Professional
SIGN_ERR_1 does not require professional help — it is an account and connectivity issue you can resolve yourself. If you cannot remember your Amazon password, reset it at amazon.com before trying to sign in on the Fire Stick. If you suspect your account has been compromised, change your password and review account security at Amazon.com before signing back into the Fire Stick.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Fire Stick at all while signed out?
Very limited functionality is available without signing in. You can access the Settings menu and connect to Wi-Fi. However, you cannot stream any content, access your purchased apps, or use Alexa. Almost everything useful on a Fire Stick requires an active Amazon account sign-in. Resolving SIGN_ERR_1 and signing back in should be your top priority.
Why would Amazon's sign-in servers be down?
Amazon's server infrastructure is very reliable but does experience occasional outages. You can check the current status of Amazon's services at downdetector.com or the AWS status page. If Amazon services are showing problems, simply wait 30 to 60 minutes and try signing in again. Server outages are almost always brief and resolve without any action on your part.
I changed my Amazon password and now my Fire Stick shows SIGN_ERR_1. What do I do?
Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Amazon Account > Deregister. After deregistering, choose 'Register' and sign in with your new password. You will need to re-accept Amazon's terms and your content library will re-populate automatically. All your previously purchased and downloaded apps can be reinstalled from the Apps section.
