STORAGE_2
Amazon Fire Stick
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
STORAGE_2 means the Fire Stick has detected corrupted app data in its internal storage. Unlike STORAGE_1 which is about running out of space, STORAGE_2 is about data that has been damaged — usually from an interrupted update, a power cut, or a failing internal storage chip. The affected app or apps will not open or will crash immediately until the corrupted data is cleared. In most cases this is fixable without a factory reset.
Affected Models
- Fire TV Stick (2nd gen and later)
- Fire TV Stick Lite
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max
- Fire TV Cube
Common Causes
- An app update was interrupted midway — by a power cut, unplugging the device, or a crash — leaving the app's data files in a corrupted state
- The Fire Stick's internal flash storage is beginning to fail after years of use, causing random write errors
- A sudden restart or power interruption while an app was actively writing data corrupted the storage files
- Multiple apps attempted to write data simultaneously during a system update and one of them failed mid-write
- The Fire Stick ran out of storage space mid-write, creating incomplete and unreadable files
How to Fix It
-
Identify which app is affected and clear its data. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, find the problem app, and tap 'Clear Data.' This removes all stored data and resets the app to its fresh-install state.
Unlike Clear Cache, Clear Data removes your login and saved settings for that app. You will need to sign back in after doing this.
-
After clearing the data, uninstall and reinstall the affected app. This ensures the app itself — not just its data — is completely fresh.
Go to the App Store on your Fire Stick, find the app, and reinstall it. All your account data (watchlists, subscriptions) is stored in the cloud and will come back when you sign in again.
-
Make sure your Fire Stick is plugged into a proper wall outlet using the included power adapter — not into a TV USB port. USB ports on TVs do not provide enough stable power, which can cause storage write errors.
Underpowering is a very common cause of data corruption on Fire Sticks. The included Amazon power adapter is required for reliable operation.
-
Keep the Fire Stick plugged in during updates. Never unplug the device while it is installing an update. If you see an 'Installing update...' screen, wait for it to complete fully before unplugging.
An interrupted update is one of the most common causes of STORAGE_2. Treat the update screen like a 'do not turn off' warning.
-
If multiple apps are affected or the error returns, perform a factory reset. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. After the reset, only reinstall apps you actively use to keep storage healthy.
A factory reset is the most reliable fix for widespread storage corruption. Your Amazon account, subscriptions, and watch history are saved in the cloud — nothing is permanently lost.
When to Call a Professional
STORAGE_2 usually does not require professional help. If the error persists after clearing app data and performing a factory reset, the internal flash storage chip may be failing. At that point the device itself needs to be replaced — Fire Sticks are not repairable at a component level and a new one typically costs $25 to $50.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clear Data delete my subscription?
No. Your streaming subscriptions (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, etc.) are tied to your account with those services — not stored on the Fire Stick. Clearing an app's data only removes the local login token and settings saved on the device. After signing back in, everything is exactly as you left it. The same applies to Amazon Prime Video — your watchlist and rental history are saved in your Amazon account.
How long do Fire Sticks last before the storage starts failing?
Flash storage chips (the type used in Fire Sticks) are rated for a limited number of write cycles. With normal use — mainly reading streaming data — a Fire Stick should last 3 to 7 years before storage degradation becomes noticeable. Signs that the flash is failing include frequent STORAGE_2 errors across multiple apps, apps that fail to install, and factory resets that do not fully resolve the problem.
Can I back up my Fire Stick data before clearing it?
There is no built-in backup tool for Fire Stick app data. However, the important content — your watch history, subscriptions, and purchased content — is all stored in your Amazon account and associated streaming accounts. The only things you might lose are local app settings like custom preferences within a specific app. These are quick to set up again after reinstalling.
