Battery Draining Fast

Ring Video Doorbell

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Ring device battery is running out much faster than the expected 6-12 months. High traffic in front of the camera, a weak Wi-Fi signal, cold weather, and Live View usage are the most common causes. Adjusting motion sensitivity and improving Wi-Fi signal are the two fastest ways to extend battery life.

Affected Models

  • Ring Video Doorbell (all generations)
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
  • Ring Stick Up Cam
  • Ring Spotlight Cam

Common Causes

  • High motion event volume is waking the device and recording dozens of times per day
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal forces the device to work harder to maintain its connection, draining power faster
  • Frequent Live View sessions consume significant battery each time someone opens the camera feed
  • Cold weather reduces battery capacity — lithium batteries drain faster below 40F (4C)
  • Motion zones are set too wide, capturing cars, trees, and shadows as motion events

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Ring app, tap your device, then tap 'Event History' to see how many motion events are recorded per day.

If you are getting 50+ events per day, that is likely the main cause. Each event wakes the device, records video, and uploads it.

  2. In the Ring app, go to your device > Motion Settings and reduce the Motion Sensitivity slider.

Lower sensitivity means fewer activations from passing cars, distant movement, or wind-blown plants.

  3. In Motion Settings, set a custom Motion Zone to cover only the area you care about — your porch or driveway, not the street.

A smaller motion zone dramatically reduces unnecessary recordings and battery use.

  4. In the Ring app, go to Device Health and check the RSSI (signal strength) number.

RSSI above -60 is good. If it shows -70 or worse, the device is straining to stay connected. Move your router closer or add a Ring Chime Pro as a Wi-Fi extender.

  5. Reduce how often you open Live View in the app.

Each Live View session can consume as much battery as several motion events. Use Event History to review footage instead of opening a live feed.

  6. If the device is in a cold location, check battery level more frequently during winter months.

Cold reduces battery capacity. A battery that lasts 9 months in summer may only last 3 months in winter. Bring it inside to charge when it drops below 20%.

When to Call a Professional

Battery issues are almost always a settings or environment problem, not a hardware defect. If a brand-new battery drains within hours after a full charge, contact Ring support for a possible warranty replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Ring battery last?

Ring states the battery should last 6 to 12 months under typical use. Heavy use — frequent motion events, Live View sessions, or poor Wi-Fi — can cut that to weeks or months. Most users who optimize their motion settings see battery life of 3 to 6 months.

Does Ring battery drain faster in winter?

Yes — cold temperatures significantly reduce lithium battery capacity. At 32F (0C) a battery may only deliver 60-70% of its normal capacity. This is a normal battery characteristic, not a defect. Just plan to charge more frequently in winter.

Can I hardwire my Ring doorbell to stop worrying about the battery?

Some Ring models support hardwired installation, which keeps the battery topped up using your existing doorbell wiring. However, the hardwired connection trickle-charges the battery — it does not replace battery power entirely. Check your Ring model's specifications in the app under Device Health to see if hardwiring is supported.
