Doorbell Not Ringing
Ring Smart Doorbell
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Someone pressed your Ring doorbell but nothing rang inside your home. This usually means chime settings are off, or your in-home chime isn't compatible. Follow the steps below to fix it.
Affected Models
- Ring Video Doorbell 4
- Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
- Ring Video Doorbell Wired
- Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
Common Causes
- In-home chime alerts are turned off in the Ring app
- The Ring Chime or Chime Pro is unplugged or offline
- Your existing doorbell chime is not compatible with Ring
- The doorbell button is physically stuck or damaged
- The doorbell is not receiving enough power to trigger the chime
How to Fix It
-
Open the Ring app, tap your doorbell, then go to 'In-Home Chime Settings'.
Make sure 'Ring My In-Home Doorbell' is toggled ON.
-
If you use a Ring Chime, check that it is plugged in and its light is on.
Tap the Ring Chime in the app to confirm it is online.
-
Test the doorbell button by pressing it — watch the app for a notification.
If the app gets the alert but nothing rings, the problem is with the chime setup, not the doorbell itself.
-
Check that your existing indoor chime is compatible with Ring.
Go to ring.com/compatibility and enter your chime model. Some older chimes require a Pro Power Kit to work.
-
Check the doorbell transformer voltage — it should be between 8V and 24V AC.
Insufficient power is a common reason Ring cannot trigger a wired chime. An electrician can test this.
When to Call a Professional
If you've checked all settings and the doorbell button feels stuck or unresponsive, a technician can inspect the wiring. Low-voltage wiring issues can prevent the chime from triggering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Ring Chime to hear the doorbell inside?
Not necessarily — if you have a wired doorbell chime, Ring can trigger it. But if you have no existing chime, you'll need a Ring Chime or Ring Chime Pro. The app will also send you a notification when someone presses the button.
My Ring app gets the notification but my chime doesn't ring. Why?
This means the doorbell is working fine but the chime connection has a problem. Check the 'In-Home Chime Settings' in the app and confirm the chime type is set correctly. Also check the wiring and transformer voltage.
Can Ring work without being wired to a doorbell?
Yes — battery-powered Ring doorbells do not need wiring at all. You can add a Ring Chime for indoor alerts. The app notification always works regardless of chime setup.
