Night Vision Not Working
Ring Smart Camera / Doorbell
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ring camera's night vision isn't switching on or the image looks too dark. This is usually a settings issue or something blocking the infrared sensor. The steps below will help.
Affected Models
- Ring Video Doorbell 4
- Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
- Ring Video Doorbell Wired
- Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
Common Causes
- Night vision is disabled in the Ring app settings
- A bright light nearby is confusing the automatic night mode sensor
- The camera lens or IR sensor is dirty or covered
- The camera is mounted behind glass, which blocks infrared light
- Color night vision is enabled but there is not enough ambient light for it
How to Fix It
-
Open the Ring app, tap your camera, then go to 'Device Settings' > 'Video Settings'.
Make sure 'Night Vision' is set to 'Auto' or 'On'.
-
Check if any bright lights — porch lights, street lights — are shining directly at the camera.
Bright nearby lights can trick the sensor into thinking it's still daytime. Reposition the camera or shade the light source.
-
Clean the camera lens and the infrared sensor window with a soft dry cloth.
Dust, spider webs, and water spots can seriously degrade night vision quality.
-
If your camera is mounted behind glass, move it outside.
Glass blocks the infrared light Ring uses for night vision. The camera must have a clear, unobstructed view.
-
If you have Color Night Vision enabled, try switching it off.
Color night vision requires more ambient light. Standard night vision (black and white) works in near-total darkness.
When to Call a Professional
If the infrared LEDs never light up in complete darkness after all fixes, the IR hardware may have failed. Contact Ring Support — the device may be eligible for replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Ring camera show a grainy image at night?
Grain at night usually means the IR LEDs are working but the scene is very dark. Try adding a small outdoor light near the camera — this dramatically improves night image quality. Also clean the lens to remove any smudges.
Why is night vision only black and white?
Standard night vision uses infrared light, which cameras capture in black and white. This is normal and how most security cameras work. Color night vision is a separate feature that requires enough ambient light to work well.
Does Ring night vision work in complete darkness?
Yes — the infrared LEDs produce their own light that the camera can see but your eyes cannot. In complete darkness, the camera will still show a usable black-and-white image. Range is typically 5 to 9 metres depending on the model.
