Ring Video Doorbell

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Ring doorbell offline means the device has lost its connection to the internet and cannot send alerts or stream video. The most common causes are the Ring doorbell's Wi-Fi signal being too weak or the router needing a restart.

Affected Models

  • Ring Video Doorbell (1st–4th gen)
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
  • Ring Video Doorbell Wired
  • Ring Video Doorbell Elite

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi signal too weak at the doorbell location
  • Router restarted and the doorbell needs to reconnect
  • Wi-Fi password changed — doorbell still using old password
  • Router set to 5 GHz only — Ring doorbells primarily use 2.4 GHz
  • Doorbell power source failed (battery dead or wiring issue)
  • Ring servers temporarily unavailable

How to Fix It

  1. Check the Ring Device Health in the app.

Open the Ring app → tap the three lines (menu) → Devices → select your doorbell → Device Health. This page shows the Wi-Fi signal strength (RSSI), battery level (if battery-powered), and connection status. RSSI values of -40 to -65 are good. RSSI below -70 (e.g. -75, -80) indicates a signal that is too weak for reliable operation.

  2. Restart the router.

Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully reconnect. The Ring doorbell will attempt to reconnect automatically. Check the Ring app after 3–5 minutes to see if the device comes back online.

  3. Reconnect the Ring doorbell to Wi-Fi if the password changed.

In the Ring app: tap the three lines → Devices → select the doorbell → Device Health → Change Wi-Fi Network. Follow the in-app steps to reconnect the doorbell to the network with the new password.

  4. Improve Wi-Fi signal strength.

If the RSSI is below -70, the signal is too weak. Solutions: move the router closer, use a Wi-Fi extender, or use the Ring Chime Pro (a Ring-specific Wi-Fi extender). Brick walls, metal objects, and distance are the main signal blockers between the router and doorbell.

  5. Check the power source.

For battery-powered Ring doorbells: check the battery level in Device Health. If below 20%, charge the battery. For hardwired Ring doorbells: check the transformer voltage (Ring requires 16–24V AC). An underpowered transformer can cause random offline events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Ring doorbell keep going offline at night?

Ring doorbells that go offline specifically at night often indicate a power issue — the doorbell's transformer or battery cannot maintain the connection under the reduced household current load at night. Check the transformer voltage (should be 16–24V AC). Also check whether your router is set to restart on a schedule overnight — if it reboots at 3 AM, the Ring drops offline until the router comes back up.
