Siren Not Working
Ring Video Doorbell
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Ring siren is not activating when expected during an alarm or test. This is usually caused by the siren being disabled in the Ring app, the device being offline, or a Ring Alarm system configuration issue. Most fixes take just a few minutes in the Ring app.
Affected Models
- Ring Video Doorbell (all generations)
- Ring Video Doorbell Pro
- Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
- Ring Stick Up Cam
- Ring Spotlight Cam
Common Causes
- The siren is disabled in the Ring app device settings
- The Ring device is offline and cannot receive the siren activation command
- The Ring Alarm Base Station has lost its connection, preventing alarm signals from reaching devices
- The device volume is set to zero or the siren feature is not supported on that model
- A Ring Protect subscription has lapsed, affecting some alarm and siren features
How to Fix It
-
Open the Ring app, tap your device, then tap 'Device Settings' and look for a Siren or Sound option.
Some Ring devices have an in-app toggle to enable or disable the siren. Make sure it is switched on.
-
In the Ring app, tap your device and check 'Device Health' — confirm the device shows as online.
If the device is offline, the siren command cannot reach it. Fix the offline issue first by restoring Wi-Fi or power.
-
Check that your Ring Alarm Base Station is powered on and connected — look for a solid green light on the Base Station.
If you use Ring Alarm, the Base Station must be online for siren alerts to work. A yellow or red light indicates a problem.
-
Test the siren manually: in the Ring app, go to your device > Device Settings > Test Your Siren (if available).
This confirms whether the siren hardware is functional. If no sound plays during the test, the issue is with the device itself.
-
Check the volume setting on devices that support it: in the Ring app, go to Device Settings > Device Volume.
If the volume slider is at zero, the siren will not be audible even when triggered. Raise it to at least 75%.
When to Call a Professional
If your Ring Alarm Base Station repeatedly goes offline or fails to communicate with devices, contact Ring support. For a full home security audit or professional monitoring setup, Ring's own installation service is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ring Video Doorbell have a built-in siren?
Not all Ring doorbells have a loud external siren — it depends on the model. The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 and some camera models have a built-in siren. If you want a loud alarm siren for security, the Ring Alarm system with its dedicated siren accessory is the recommended solution.
Why does my Ring siren go off but no one is notified?
The siren activating locally and app notifications are two separate systems. Check that notifications are enabled in the Ring app and that your phone's notification permissions allow Ring alerts. If you have professional monitoring through Ring Protect Plus, also verify your monitoring service contact details are up to date.
Can neighbors trigger my Ring siren accidentally?
No — the Ring siren can only be triggered by you through the Ring app, or automatically by a Ring Alarm event on your account. Neighbors cannot trigger your siren remotely. If the siren is going off unexpectedly, check your Ring Alarm sensor history to see what triggered the alarm.
