Two-Way Audio Not Working

Ring Smart Doorbell / Camera

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The two-way audio in your Ring live view isn't working. You might not hear the visitor, or they can't hear you. This is almost always a microphone permission or app issue.

Affected Models

  • Ring Video Doorbell 4
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
  • Ring Video Doorbell Wired
  • Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

Common Causes

  • The Ring app does not have microphone permission on your phone
  • Your phone's microphone is blocked by a case or cover
  • The camera's speaker or microphone is damaged or clogged with debris
  • A weak Wi-Fi signal is causing audio to cut out
  • The Ring app needs to be updated

How to Fix It

  1. Check that the Ring app has microphone permission on your phone.

On iPhone: Settings > Privacy > Microphone > Ring. On Android: Settings > Apps > Ring > Permissions > Microphone.

  2. Check that your phone's volume is turned up during live view.

The speaker button in the Ring live view screen also has its own mute toggle — tap it to unmute.

  3. Check your phone's microphone for blockages — a case, screen protector, or debris can muffle it.

Try removing your phone case and test again.

  4. Update the Ring app to the latest version.

Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Ring, and tap Update if available.

  5. Check the camera's signal strength in Device Health — weak Wi-Fi causes audio dropouts.

RSSI should be -60 or better. Add a Ring Chime Pro to boost coverage if the signal is weak.

When to Call a Professional

If the speaker on the doorbell itself makes no sound at all, the hardware may be faulty. Contact Ring Support — they can confirm whether a replacement is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the visitor hear me through Ring but I can't hear them?

This is usually a phone speaker volume issue. Make sure your ringer volume is up and the speaker isn't muted in the live view screen. Also check that nothing is blocking your phone's speaker.

Why does Ring two-way audio echo or sound hollow?

Echo happens when the doorbell picks up its own speaker output. Make sure you are not using speakerphone on your phone while also having the doorbell speaker loud. Talking one at a time also helps reduce echo.

Does two-way audio work on all Ring devices?

Yes — all Ring doorbells and cameras include two-way audio. It works through the Ring app during live view or when you answer a motion alert. No subscription is needed for two-way audio.
