023
Roku Streaming Device
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error 023 means your Roku detected a mismatch between its display output and what your TV supports. The resolution or refresh rate Roku is trying to use is not compatible with your TV. Changing the display settings on your Roku or on your TV will usually fix this right away.
Affected Models
- Roku Express
- Roku Streaming Stick
- Roku Ultra
- Roku Premiere
- Roku Express 4K+
Common Causes
- Roku was set to output 4K or HDR but the connected TV does not support those formats
- The HDMI cable being used does not support the high resolution Roku is trying to output
- The TV's HDMI port settings are not enabled for 4K, HDR, or HDCP 2.2 content
- A display resolution change was applied that is outside the range this TV can accept
- Roku was moved to a different TV that supports a different set of resolutions than the previous one
How to Fix It
-
Press the Home button on your Roku remote five times, then press Up once, Rewind twice, and Fast Forward twice.
This key sequence forces Roku into a screen with display mode options — it works even when the screen is blank or distorted.
-
Select 720p or 1080p from the resolution options that appear. This is a safe resolution that works with nearly all modern TVs.
If you cannot see the Roku screen at all, wait 30 seconds and your Roku will automatically revert to its previous display setting.
-
Go to Settings > Display Type and let Roku auto-detect the correct resolution for your TV.
Auto-detect reads the TV's supported resolution list via the HDMI connection and picks the best match.
-
Check the HDMI cable. Replace it with a high-speed HDMI cable rated for your desired resolution.
4K HDR content requires an HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps bandwidth (labeled 'Premium High Speed HDMI').
-
On your TV, go to the input/HDMI settings for the port Roku is connected to and enable HDMI UHD Deep Color or Enhanced Format if available.
This setting is called different things by different TV brands: Samsung calls it 'Input Signal Plus', LG calls it 'HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color'.
When to Call a Professional
Error 023 is almost always a settings issue you can fix yourself. No hardware repair is needed in the vast majority of cases. If the error persists after trying all settings adjustments, the Roku HDMI port or the TV's HDMI input may be faulty.
Frequently Asked Questions
What resolution should I set my Roku to if I am not sure what my TV supports?
Choose 1080p at 60Hz — this is a safe, universally supported setting for any TV made in the last 15 years. Once you confirm the picture looks correct, you can try enabling 4K or HDR if your TV supports those formats.
Why did error 023 appear after I changed nothing?
A Roku automatic software update may have changed the display output settings. A power cycle of the TV or Roku can sometimes trigger a resolution renegotiation that exposes a compatibility issue. Resetting the display mode using the key sequence in step 1 will resolve it.
Does error 023 mean my Roku is broken?
No. Error 023 is a compatibility error between Roku's output settings and your TV. Neither device is broken. Adjusting the resolution setting as described above will clear the error without any hardware repair.
