057

Roku Streaming Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Roku error code 057 means your Roku connected to the Wi-Fi network but the router did not assign it an IP address. Every device on a network needs an IP address — a unique number — to send and receive data. The router normally hands these out automatically through a service called DHCP. If DHCP is turned off, full, or glitching, the Roku cannot get an address and cannot reach the internet. Restarting the router usually fixes this instantly.

Affected Models

  • Roku Express
  • Roku Streaming Stick
  • Roku Ultra
  • Roku TV
  • Roku Premiere
  • Roku 4K

Common Causes

  • The router's DHCP server ran out of available IP addresses to assign — too many devices connected
  • The router's DHCP service has crashed or glitched and needs a restart to recover
  • DHCP is disabled in the router settings, requiring devices to use manual IP addresses
  • The Roku's stored IP address from a previous connection is conflicting with another device on the network
  • A firmware update on the router changed DHCP settings or broke DHCP functionality

How to Fix It

  1. Restart your router. Unplug it from the power outlet, wait a full 60 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait another 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up, then check if the Roku connects successfully.

A router restart resets the DHCP service and clears any stale IP address assignments. This fixes 057 in the majority of cases.

  2. Restart your Roku as well. Go to Settings > System > System restart, or simply unplug the Roku from power for 30 seconds and plug it back in. This clears the Roku's stored network state.

Restarting both the router and the Roku together ensures both sides start the connection fresh.

  3. Check how many devices are connected to your Wi-Fi. Log in to your router's admin page (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser). Look for a connected devices list. If many devices are listed, check whether DHCP is set to allow enough addresses.

A typical home router's DHCP pool supports 50 to 100 devices by default. If you have a lot of smart home devices, you might genuinely be running low on available addresses.

  4. Assign a manual IP address to the Roku as a workaround. On the Roku go to Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless. After connecting, choose 'Set up manually' or look in the advanced settings for manual IP configuration. Use an address like 192.168.1.200 that is outside your router's normal DHCP range.

Your router's gateway IP is listed in its admin page. Your manual IP should be in the same range (like 192.168.1.x) but outside the DHCP pool to avoid conflicts.

  5. Verify that DHCP is enabled in your router settings. Log in to the router admin page, find the DHCP settings (usually under LAN or Network settings), and confirm the DHCP server is turned on and the address pool has a reasonable range of addresses.

DHCP is on by default in all consumer routers. If it is off, someone turned it off manually — or a firmware update reset it. Turning it back on should resolve 057 immediately.

When to Call a Professional

If restarting the router does not resolve error 057, and you confirm DHCP is enabled in the router settings, the router's DHCP service may have a deeper fault. Contact your ISP if the router was provided by them — they can remotely diagnose and reset router settings. For personally owned routers, a factory reset of the router usually resolves persistent DHCP issues, though it will reset all your Wi-Fi settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is DHCP and why does the Roku need it?

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is the system your router uses to automatically assign an IP address to every device that connects to your network. Think of it like the router handing out numbered name tags at a party so everyone knows who is who. Without an IP address, the Roku has no identity on the network and cannot send or receive any data. DHCP makes this automatic so you do not have to manually configure addresses on every device.

Can too many smart home devices cause error 057?

Yes. Every device on your Wi-Fi needs an IP address from the router's DHCP pool. If you have dozens of smart home devices, streaming sticks, phones, laptops, and tablets all competing for addresses, the pool can run low. The fix is to log in to your router and increase the DHCP pool range — for example, changing it from 100 addresses to 200. Your router's manual or the ISP's support page can guide you through that setting.

Is a manual IP address better than DHCP for a Roku?

For most homes, DHCP works perfectly fine and is easier to manage. A manual (static) IP address can be slightly more reliable for a Roku because it never needs to renew its lease or wait for the router to assign an address. However, if you assign a manual IP, make sure it is outside the DHCP pool range to avoid conflicts. It is a minor optimization, not a necessity for normal use.
