802

Sonos Smart Speaker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 802 appears during the Sonos setup process when the app cannot find the speaker on your network. This is almost always caused by the phone and speaker being on different Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth being off on your phone, or the speaker needing a power cycle. Following the steps below gets most people through setup on the first retry.

Affected Models

  • Sonos One
  • Sonos Arc
  • Sonos Beam
  • Sonos Move
  • Sonos Era 100

Common Causes

  • Phone is connected to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi band while the Sonos speaker uses 2.4 GHz
  • Bluetooth is disabled on the phone (required for initial speaker discovery)
  • Speaker has not fully booted — the status light is still pulsing
  • Router has AP isolation or client isolation enabled, preventing devices from seeing each other
  • A previous partial setup left the speaker in an unresponsive state

How to Fix It

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone — Sonos uses Bluetooth to discover new speakers, even on a Wi-Fi setup.

This is the most commonly missed step; many people assume the app works over Wi-Fi only, but initial discovery requires Bluetooth.

  2. Ensure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the Sonos speaker to join — not a guest network or a separate 5 GHz band.

If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks with different names, connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network before starting setup.

  3. Unplug the Sonos speaker, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait until the status light pulses orange and white before opening the app.

The speaker must be fully in setup mode (pulsing light) for the app to find it — starting the app too early causes Error 802.

  4. Check your router settings and disable AP Isolation (also called Client Isolation or Wireless Isolation) if it is turned on.

AP Isolation prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other, which blocks the Sonos app from finding the speaker.

  5. If the speaker was previously set up, perform a factory reset: press and hold the Join button while plugging in the power cable until the light flashes orange and white.

A partial previous setup can leave the speaker in a state where it is not discoverable — a factory reset returns it to first-run mode.

When to Call a Professional

If Error 802 appears on a brand-new speaker after every attempt and a factory reset does not help, the speaker's wireless hardware may be defective. Contact Sonos Support at support.sonos.com — defective new units are replaced under warranty with no shipping charge. Keep your purchase receipt and note the serial number on the underside of the speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my phone need to stay on Wi-Fi during Sonos setup, or can I use mobile data?

Your phone must be connected to Wi-Fi — not mobile data — during Sonos setup. The app needs to be on the same local network as the speaker to complete the connection.

My router only has one network name — can that still cause Error 802?

Yes, if your router automatically handles both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name (called band steering), the phone may be pushed to 5 GHz. If setup keeps failing, temporarily disable band steering in your router settings, or create a separate 2.4 GHz SSID for setup.

How do I know if my Sonos speaker is in setup mode?

A Sonos speaker in setup mode shows an orange and white pulsing light. If the light is solid white or a different color, the speaker is not in setup mode — unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the pulsing pattern.
