Alexa / Google Not Working

TP-Link Smart Plug

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

TP-Link Kasa not responding to Alexa or Google Home commands is most often caused by the Kasa skill being unlinked, a device name that Alexa cannot parse correctly, or a discovery that has not been run after adding a new device. Re-enable the Kasa skill in the Alexa or Google Home app and run a new device discovery.

Affected Models

  • All Kasa Smart Plugs
  • All Kasa Smart Bulbs
  • All Kasa Smart Switches

Common Causes

  • Kasa skill for Alexa or Google Home action is disabled or unlinked
  • Device has not been discovered after being added to the Kasa app
  • Device name contains words that confuse the voice assistant (numbers, special characters)
  • Kasa account password was changed, breaking the skill link

How to Fix It

  1. In the Alexa app: go to More > Skills & Games and search for TP-Link Kasa. Open the skill and check whether it is enabled. If it shows as disabled, re-enable it and sign in with your Kasa account.

If you recently changed your Kasa password, the skill loses its authorization and must be re-linked with the new password.

  2. In the Google Home app: tap the + icon, then Set up device, then Works with Google, and search for TP-Link Kasa. Sign in and link the account.

After linking, Google Home imports all your Kasa devices automatically.

  3. After linking the skill, ask Alexa to discover devices or tap Discover Devices in the Alexa app. For Google Home, devices appear immediately after linking.

  4. If specific devices still do not respond, check their names in the Kasa app. Rename devices to simple names without numbers or symbols — for example, use Living Room Lamp instead of Living Room Lamp 1.

Names like Plug 1, Switch 3, or Outlet #2 can confuse voice parsing. Short descriptive names work best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alexa says it cannot reach my Kasa device even though the Kasa app shows it as online — why?

This usually means the Alexa skill is linked but the specific device was added to Kasa after the last discovery. Say Alexa, discover devices or go to Alexa app > Devices > Discover to scan for newly added Kasa devices.
