Away Mode Not Working

TP-Link Smart Plug

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Kasa Away Mode randomly turns connected lights on and off to simulate occupancy while you are away. If it is not activating, check that Away Mode is enabled in the Kasa app (not just scheduled) and that the device is showing as Online. Away Mode requires a live cloud connection — an offline device will not execute the random on/off pattern.

Affected Models

  • All Kasa Smart Plugs
  • All Kasa Smart Bulbs
  • All Kasa Smart Switches

Common Causes

  • Away Mode is not enabled in the Kasa app — it must be toggled on manually
  • Device is offline and cannot receive the random on/off commands from the cloud
  • Away Mode was set but the time window does not include the current time
  • Schedule conflict — a regular schedule overrides Away Mode during overlap

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Kasa app and tap the device. Go to Schedules and look for the Away Mode entry. Confirm the toggle is switched ON and the time window is active.

Away Mode has a configurable time window (for example 6 PM to 11 PM). If the current time is outside this window, the feature will not activate.

  2. Check that the device shows as Online. Away Mode is cloud-executed — if the plug or bulb is offline, no random commands are sent.

  3. Check for conflicting schedules. If a regular on/off schedule overlaps with the Away Mode window, the schedule takes priority. Disable or adjust any conflicting schedules.

  4. Delete and recreate the Away Mode entry if it still does not trigger. Tap Away Mode, tap Delete, then set it up again from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How random is Kasa Away Mode?

Kasa Away Mode turns the device on and off at random intervals within the configured time window, varying by 30–90 minutes each day. The intent is to make lighting look natural rather than following a predictable pattern. For greater realism, set up Away Mode on multiple lights in different rooms.
