Firmware Update Failed

TP-Link Smart Plug

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kasa device that goes offline or stops responding after a firmware update almost always recovers on its own within 5 minutes — do not unplug it during the update process. If it is still offline after 10 minutes, perform a factory reset by holding the reset button for 5 seconds and re-add it to the Kasa app.

Affected Models

  • All Kasa Smart Plugs
  • All Kasa Smart Bulbs
  • All Kasa Smart Switches

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection dropped mid-update, leaving the device in a partial update state
  • Power was cut to the device during the update
  • Router restarted during the update and the device could not reconnect

How to Fix It

  1. Do not unplug or cut power to the device. If the update appears to be stuck, wait up to 10 minutes — firmware updates include a reboot cycle that can look like the device has gone offline.

Most Kasa firmware updates complete in 3–5 minutes including the automatic reboot. The device will reappear in the app once it has restarted and reconnected.

  2. If the device is still offline after 10 minutes, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. In most cases this allows it to complete the interrupted update or boot into the previous firmware.

  3. If the device will not come back online (LED is flashing amber rapidly or no LED response), perform a factory reset: press and hold the reset button on the device for 5–10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then release.

A factory reset erases the device configuration including its WiFi credentials. You will need to add it again in the Kasa app.

  4. After the reset, open the Kasa app and go through the Add Device process. The device will connect to your WiFi and download the latest firmware automatically.
