Smart Bulb Not Responding

TP-Link Smart Bulb

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A TP-Link Kasa smart bulb showing as Offline or not responding to app or voice commands is almost always because the wall switch controlling the light fixture has been turned off, cutting power to the bulb. Kasa smart bulbs require constant power — the wall switch must always be left in the ON position.

Affected Models

  • Kasa KL125
  • Kasa KL135
  • Kasa KL150
  • Kasa KL50B
  • Kasa KL130B

Common Causes

  • Wall switch was turned off, cutting power to the smart bulb
  • Power outage reset the bulb — it may not have reconnected to WiFi
  • WiFi network name or password was changed
  • Bulb is too far from the router for a stable connection

How to Fix It

  1. Check the wall switch for the light fixture. It must be in the ON position at all times for the smart bulb to stay connected. If it was switched off and back on, the bulb should reconnect within 60 seconds.

Use the Kasa app or voice commands to control brightness and colour — never the wall switch. If family members keep using the wall switch, consider replacing it with a smart switch that leaves the circuit always powered.

  2. If the wall switch is on but the bulb is still offline, the bulb may not have reconnected after a power outage or WiFi change. Turn the wall switch off for 5 seconds, then back on. Wait 60 seconds for the bulb to reconnect.

  3. If the bulb still does not appear online, reset it by toggling the wall switch off and on five times quickly (each on and off cycle should be about 1 second). The bulb will flash to confirm it has entered pairing mode. Add it again in the Kasa app.

  4. Ensure your WiFi router is on 2.4 GHz. Kasa smart bulbs only support 2.4 GHz WiFi and will not connect to 5 GHz networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still turn the light on manually if the Kasa app is down?

Yes — the wall switch still physically controls power to the bulb. However, if you want to retain smart control after a manual switch-off, you need to power it back on and wait for it to reconnect to WiFi before the app or voice commands work again.
