Plug Not Turning On

TP-Link Smart Plug

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A TP-Link Kasa smart plug that will not turn the outlet on is most often caused by the plug being in a paused or off schedule, a lost connection to the Kasa cloud, or the physical outlet it is plugged into having no power. Check the Kasa app to confirm the plug shows as Online, then tap the power icon to manually toggle it.

Affected Models

  • Kasa EP25
  • Kasa TP25
  • Kasa TP15
  • Kasa EP40
  • Kasa KP115

Common Causes

  • Plug is offline — lost its WiFi connection and cannot receive commands
  • A schedule has turned the plug off and manual override is needed
  • The wall outlet the plug is inserted into has no power
  • Plug firmware needs updating after a compatibility change

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Kasa app and check whether the plug shows as Online or Offline. If it shows Offline, the plug has lost its WiFi connection.

An offline plug does not respond to app commands or voice assistants. See the Kasa Not Connecting to App page for steps to reconnect it.

  2. Check for an active schedule in the Kasa app. Tap the plug, go to Schedules, and confirm no schedule has turned the plug off for this time period.

A schedule set for the wrong time zone can keep a plug switched off at unexpected hours.

  3. Test the wall outlet by plugging in a lamp or phone charger directly. If the outlet has no power, check the circuit breaker for that circuit.

Kasa smart plugs do not work in switched outlets controlled by a wall switch that is off.

  4. Press the physical button on the plug itself. If the LED changes and the outlet activates, the hardware is working — the issue is with the app or network connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Kasa plug turns on in the app but the LED stays red — what does that mean?

A solid red LED on a Kasa smart plug means the plug is not connected to the internet (offline) even if the button toggles locally. Red usually means no cloud connection; amber or orange means connecting; green means online and working normally. Restart your router and the plug to restore the cloud connection.
