Calibration Error

August Smart Lock

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A calibration error on an August lock means the lock cannot find the correct locked or unlocked positions. Run the calibration routine in the app — usually after door alignment, low battery, or strike misalignment.

Affected Models

  • August Smart Lock Pro
  • August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen)
  • August Smart Lock (3rd Gen)

Common Causes

  • Door or strike plate misaligned, increasing torque needed to throw the bolt
  • Deadbolt physically sticking due to weather or settling
  • Low battery causing weak motor torque
  • Lock not properly seated on the existing deadbolt
  • Worn or corroded deadbolt requiring lubrication

How to Fix It

  1. Test the deadbolt by hand first.

Remove the August lock and turn the existing deadbolt by hand using the thumbturn. It should turn smoothly and easily. If it sticks, your door or strike plate is misaligned — the August cannot reliably lock until that is fixed.

  2. Realign the strike plate if needed.

If the deadbolt does not slide easily into the strike, file or move the strike plate so it does. A freely moving deadbolt is essential for August calibration to succeed.

  3. Replace the batteries.

Low battery voltage reduces motor torque and causes calibration failures. Use fresh, name-brand alkaline AA batteries (or per the model's specs).

  4. Run the calibration routine.

In the August app, go to the lock settings and find the Calibrate option. Follow the prompts — typically the lock turns the bolt fully both ways to learn its travel.

  5. Lubricate the deadbolt.

Use a graphite or dry PTFE lock lubricant on the deadbolt mechanism. Do not use WD-40 or oils — they collect dust and worsen the issue over time.

When to Call a Professional

Persistent calibration failures after door alignment and battery checks may indicate a hardware fault. August support can issue a replacement under warranty.
