Wi-Fi Not Connecting

Kwikset Smart Lock

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Kwikset Halo Wi-Fi not connecting means the lock cannot reach your home network and shows as offline in the Kwikset app. The lock still works physically — keypad codes and the key all function normally. The most common causes are a changed Wi-Fi password, a 5 GHz-only network (Halo only supports 2.4 GHz), or the router being too far from the lock.

Affected Models

  • Kwikset Halo
  • Kwikset Halo Touch

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi password was changed and the lock still has the old credentials
  • Router is set to 5 GHz band only — Kwikset Halo requires a 2.4 GHz network
  • Wi-Fi router or access point is too far from the lock, causing a weak signal
  • Router firmware update changed security settings (e.g. WPA3-only) incompatible with the lock
  • Lock firmware needs an update that can only be applied once Wi-Fi is restored

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the lock is within range of your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network

Kwikset Halo and Halo Touch connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only — they do not support 5 GHz. On your router or app, verify that your 2.4 GHz network is active and broadcasting. If your router uses the same SSID for both bands, check whether 2.4 GHz is enabled separately in the router admin panel.

  2. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password in the Kwikset app

If your Wi-Fi password was recently changed, the lock still has the old password stored. Open the Kwikset app, go to the lock settings, select Wi-Fi Configuration, and re-enter your current 2.4 GHz network password. The lock will attempt to reconnect.

  3. Move your router or add a Wi-Fi extender closer to the lock

Deadbolt locks are typically mounted in solid wooden or metal doors, which attenuate Wi-Fi significantly. If the router is more than 10–15 metres away or separated by multiple walls, signal strength at the lock may be too low for a reliable connection. A Wi-Fi extender placed near the door can resolve this.

  4. Check your router's security mode settings

Kwikset Halo works best with WPA2-PSK (AES) security. If your router is set to WPA3-only or uses a non-standard security mode after a firmware update, the lock may fail to authenticate. Set your router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode or WPA2-only for the 2.4 GHz network to restore compatibility.

  5. Perform a Wi-Fi re-pairing through the Kwikset app if the above steps fail

In the Kwikset app, remove the lock from your account, then add it again using the Add Lock flow. During the setup process, you will be prompted to select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. This fully refreshes the Wi-Fi configuration on the lock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Kwikset Halo work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. All physical functions — keypad code entry, touch-to-lock, key operation, and programmed access codes — work entirely without Wi-Fi. You only lose remote access (locking and unlocking from the app when away from home), activity log updates, and firmware updates while offline.

Why does my Kwikset Halo keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi every few days?

Intermittent disconnections are usually caused by a weak Wi-Fi signal at the lock location, or a router that assigns a new IP address to the lock and loses track of it. Try assigning a static (reserved) IP address to the lock's MAC address in your router's DHCP settings. A Wi-Fi extender closer to the door also helps stabilise the connection.
