Keypad Lockout

Schlage Smart Lock

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Schlage keypad lockout activates after 3 to 5 incorrect PIN attempts. The lockout lasts 30 seconds to a few minutes. Use the manual key, app unlock, or wait it out — multiple wrong attempts during the lockout extend it.

Affected Models

  • Schlage Encode
  • Schlage Encode Plus
  • Schlage Connect
  • Schlage Sense
  • Schlage Touch
  • Schlage Camelot Touchscreen

Common Causes

  • Three or more incorrect PIN entries triggering security lockout
  • Keypad activated by accident (rain, animals, snow)
  • Worn or damaged keypad registering false presses
  • Battery low and keypad behaving erratically
  • Repeated lockout from incorrect PINs during the lockout period

How to Fix It

  1. Wait out the lockout.

Schlage locks impose a 30-second to multi-minute lockout after wrong PINs. Wait at least 5 minutes without touching the keypad. Pressing more buttons during the lockout extends it.

  2. Use the manual key.

All Schlage Encode, Connect, and Sense locks have a physical key override. Use your physical key to unlock. This does not clear the lockout but lets you in.

  3. Use the app to unlock (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth models).

If you have a Schlage Encode or Sense paired with the app, unlock from the app. This bypasses the keypad lockout.

  4. Try the correct PIN once after the lockout ends.

Wait at least 5 minutes, then enter the correct PIN once. If the keypad still does not respond, batteries may be low or another issue is at play.

  5. Replace the batteries.

Low batteries can cause keypads to behave erratically. Fit four fresh AA batteries and try again.

When to Call a Professional

If the lockout is permanent or repeats consistently after correct PINs, Schlage support can reset or replace the unit. Hardware faults are rare but possible.
