Wi-Fi Setup Failed

Wemo Smart Plug

Severity: Moderate

Note: This issue may not appear as a code on your device's display. This page helps you troubleshoot the underlying problem.

What Does This Error Mean?

Wemo smart plug setup failing is usually caused by entering the wrong Wi-Fi password, the phone switching off the Wemo hotspot during setup, or the router using only 5 GHz. Wemo plugs require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for setup and operation.

How to Fix It

  1. Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

  2. Verify the Wi-Fi password

  3. Set up within 1 metre of the Wemo plug

  4. Disable mobile data on your phone during setup

  5. Factory reset and retry

Frequently Asked Questions

Wemo app says setup was successful but the plug shows offline — cause?

A success message followed by offline status means the plug accepted the Wi-Fi credentials but failed to connect to the router or internet. The most common cause is a wrong Wi-Fi password. Reset the plug and try setup again with the password verified.

Wemo setup always fails at the last step on iOS — why?

iOS sometimes drops the Wemo setup hotspot connection as it detects the hotspot has no internet. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and manually connect to the Wemo_setup network just before returning to the Wemo app to complete the final step.

Wemo plug worked for years and I need to set it up on a new router — how?

Factory reset the Wemo plug (hold the reset button for 5 seconds). Then use the Wemo app to set it up again with the new router credentials, as if it were a new device.
