Activity Not Tracking
Oura Smart Ring
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Activity may not record if you forgot to wear the ring, the ring needs a sync, or the activity type was not movement-based. Oura auto-detects most workouts, but you can also log them manually in the app.
Affected Models
- Oura Ring 4
- Oura Ring 3
- Oura Ring 3 Heritage
- Oura Ring 3 Horizon
Common Causes
- Ring was not worn during the activity
- Activity has not synced to the app yet
- Activity was low-movement (e.g., cycling, swimming, weight lifting) which optical sensors track less reliably
- Activity is too short — Oura typically requires 10+ minutes of continuous activity
- Ring battery died during or before the activity
How to Fix It
-
Open the Oura app and sync manually by pulling down on the Home screen.
Activity data recorded by the ring is stored internally and uploads during the next sync. If you just finished a workout, sync immediately to see it.
-
Log the activity manually in the app if it was not auto-detected.
In the Oura app, tap the plus (+) button and select 'Add Activity'. You can enter the type, duration, and intensity manually. This adds it to your Activity Score for the day.
-
For low-movement activities (cycling, yoga, strength training), use a heart rate-based activity tag before starting.
Go to the Oura app and start an 'Active' session before beginning your workout. This tells the ring to record heart rate continuously during that window, even if physical movement is minimal.
-
Ensure the ring battery was charged before your workout.
A ring that runs out of power mid-workout records nothing from that point forward. Check battery level in the app before long exercise sessions.
-
Move the ring to your index finger for better accelerometer readings during exercise.
Oura recommends the index finger for best motion detection accuracy. Middle finger is also acceptable. Outer fingers or thumbs reduce tracking accuracy significantly.
When to Call a Professional
There is no professional service needed for activity tracking issues — this is a software and sensor limitation. If activity tracking is critically important to you for health management, discuss with your doctor whether a dedicated fitness device better suits your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Oura not detect my gym workout automatically?
Oura Ring auto-detection works best for rhythmic, movement-heavy activities like walking, running, and HIIT. Gym workouts with stationary movements (bench press, seated machines) produce little wrist motion, making them hard to auto-detect. Use the manual activity logging feature or start a tracked session in the app before your workout.
Can Oura Ring track swimming?
The Oura Ring is water-resistant (rated to 100m) and can be worn while swimming. However, optical heart rate monitoring in water is unreliable due to light refraction. Swimming will appear as movement data, but heart rate accuracy during swimming is lower than on dry land.
