Cycle Tracking Not Working

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Oura cycle tracking relies on body temperature data collected during sleep. If it is not working, the feature may not be enabled, temperature data is missing, or there is not enough baseline data yet. Enable Cycle Insights in the app and wear the ring every night.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring 4
  • Oura Ring 3
  • Oura Ring 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring 3 Horizon

Common Causes

  • Cycle Insights feature not enabled in the Oura app
  • Not enough temperature baseline data (needs 2+ weeks of nightly wear)
  • Ring not worn every night, creating temperature data gaps
  • Hormonal contraceptives altering the natural temperature pattern cycle tracking relies on
  • Oura membership lapsed on Ring 3 — Cycle Insights is a premium feature

How to Fix It

  1. Enable Cycle Insights in the Oura app: go to Home > Explore > Cycle Insights and follow the setup prompts.

Cycle tracking is off by default and must be manually enabled. You will need to enter your last period date to help calibrate the feature.

  2. Wear the ring every single night without exception.

Oura cycle tracking uses nighttime body temperature as the primary signal. Every missed night creates a gap that degrades prediction accuracy.

  3. Wait at least 2 full menstrual cycles (4–8 weeks) before evaluating accuracy.

Cycle Insights needs multiple cycles of temperature data to identify your patterns reliably. Early predictions may be less accurate — this is expected.

  4. Log your period start and end dates in the app when they occur.

Manual period logging helps Oura calibrate cycle length and phase predictions. The more accurately you log, the better the system becomes over time.

  5. Note that hormonal contraceptives suppress the natural temperature rise after ovulation, which means cycle tracking is significantly less useful or accurate for those using hormonal birth control.

This is a physiological limitation, not a bug. Non-hormonal IUDs generally do not affect temperature-based cycle tracking.

When to Call a Professional

Oura cycle tracking is a wellness tool, not a contraceptive method or medical diagnostic tool. For family planning, fertility treatment, or concerns about menstrual irregularities, consult your gynaecologist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Oura Ring predict ovulation?

Oura Cycle Insights uses temperature shifts to estimate your fertile window and ovulation, but it is not a medically validated ovulation predictor. For family planning or trying to conceive, use Oura data as general guidance and confirm with a clinical ovulation test (LH strip) or consult your doctor.

Why does my Oura cycle prediction seem off compared to my actual cycle?

Cycle predictions improve over time as Oura collects more of your personal data. In the first 1–2 cycles, predictions can be off by several days. Always log your actual period dates to help the system self-correct.
