Firmware Update Failed

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Oura Ring firmware updates fail most often because the ring battery is too low, the phone moved out of Bluetooth range, or the app connection dropped mid-update. Charge the ring fully, stay close to your phone, and the update will almost always succeed on the next attempt.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring 4
  • Oura Ring 3
  • Oura Ring 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring 3 Horizon

Common Causes

  • Ring battery is below 40% when update started
  • Phone went to sleep or out of Bluetooth range during update
  • Weak or unstable Wi-Fi or mobile data interrupted the download
  • Oura app was closed or crashed during the update
  • Another Bluetooth device interfered with the update transfer

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the Oura Ring to 100% before attempting the update again.

Oura requires at least 40% battery to start a firmware update, but 100% is strongly recommended. A power loss mid-update can corrupt the firmware.

  2. Keep your phone unlocked and the Oura app open throughout the entire update process.

The update is transferred via Bluetooth from your phone to the ring. If your phone locks or the app goes to background, the transfer stops. Update time is typically 5–15 minutes.

  3. Keep the ring and phone within 30 cm (1 foot) of each other during the update.

A weak Bluetooth signal during firmware transfer causes packet errors that corrupt the update. Stay in the same room and close together.

  4. Connect your phone to a stable Wi-Fi network before starting the update.

The Oura app downloads the firmware package from the internet before sending it to the ring. A slow or dropping mobile data connection can interrupt this download.

  5. Force-close and reopen the Oura app, then check Settings > Ring Settings > Firmware for the update option.

After a failed update, the ring often enters a safe state waiting for the next attempt. A fresh app session usually picks up where it left off.

When to Call a Professional

If the ring becomes completely unresponsive after a failed update (no Bluetooth signal, will not charge, nothing in the app), contact Oura Support immediately. A failed update that bricks the ring is covered under warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a failed firmware update erase my Oura Ring data?

No — data stored on the ring is in a separate memory area from the firmware. A failed update does not erase your health data. Once the update succeeds, all your data will still be there and will sync to the app normally.

How do I know what firmware version my Oura Ring is running?

Open the Oura app, tap your profile icon, then go to Ring Settings. The current firmware version is listed there. If an update is available, you will see an 'Update Available' prompt in the same menu.
