HRV Not Tracking
Oura Smart Ring
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
HRV is only measured during sleep, so if the ring was not worn at night, HRV will be missing. A loose ring, cold hands, or very poor sleep quality can also prevent a valid HRV reading. Ensure a snug fit and consistent nightly wear.
Affected Models
- Oura Ring 4
- Oura Ring 3
- Oura Ring 3 Heritage
- Oura Ring 3 Horizon
Common Causes
- Ring was not worn during sleep — HRV is only measured at night
- Ring is too loose, causing sensor signal loss during sleep
- Sleep was very fragmented or too short for HRV to be calculated
- Heavy alcohol or medication use suppressing HRV signal clarity
- New ring user — Oura needs 2+ weeks to establish HRV baseline
- Poor skin contact due to cold temperatures or dry skin
How to Fix It
-
Confirm you are wearing the ring during sleep every night.
Oura measures HRV only during sleep — specifically during deep sleep and REM phases. If you do not wear the ring at night, there will be no HRV data.
-
Check that the ring fits snugly and does not rotate or slide on your finger during sleep.
HRV measurement requires continuous, uninterrupted optical sensor contact. A loose ring produces gaps in the signal, making HRV calculation impossible.
-
Aim for at least 5 hours of sleep for HRV to be calculated.
Oura needs sufficient deep sleep data to produce a valid HRV reading. Nights with less than 4–5 hours of sleep, or highly fragmented sleep, may not yield an HRV value.
-
Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine in the hours before bed.
Alcohol and stimulants significantly suppress HRV during sleep, sometimes to the point where the ring cannot record a meaningful signal.
When to Call a Professional
HRV is a complex metric with many individual variables. If you are concerned about consistently very low HRV values (rather than missing data), consult your doctor — it can sometimes reflect cardiovascular or autonomic health.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a normal HRV range for Oura Ring?
HRV varies enormously between individuals — a healthy range for one person may be 20ms and for another it may be 80ms. Oura does not compare you to population averages. It compares your current HRV to your own personal baseline. What matters is your trend over time, not the absolute number.
Why did my HRV drop suddenly?
HRV commonly drops after alcohol consumption, illness, intense exercise, high stress, poor sleep, or travel. A temporary drop is normal and not a cause for alarm. If your HRV is consistently low for more than 2 weeks with no obvious lifestyle reason, mention it to your doctor.
