Nighttime Readings Missing
Oura Smart Ring
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Missing nighttime data almost always means the ring was not worn, the battery died before morning, or the ring was too loose to record accurate data. Check your battery level before bed each night and ensure the ring fits snugly.
Affected Models
- Oura Ring 4
- Oura Ring 3
- Oura Ring 3 Heritage
- Oura Ring 3 Horizon
Common Causes
- Ring was not worn during sleep
- Ring battery ran out during the night
- Ring was too loose and sensor contact was intermittent
- Sleep was very brief (under 3 hours) — Oura may not log it as a full session
- Ring was removed and replaced during the night, splitting the session
How to Fix It
-
Charge the ring to at least 80% before going to bed.
A fully charged Oura Ring lasts 5–8 days. But if your ring is already at 20% before bed, it may run out before your alarm goes off. Check battery in the app each evening.
-
Ensure the ring is on your finger before you fall asleep — not left on the nightstand.
Oura only records data when worn. Even a short period without the ring (e.g., removing it before a shower and forgetting to put it back) will create a data gap.
-
In the morning, open the Oura app to trigger a sync before doing anything else.
Sleep data stored in the ring uploads during the first sync of the day. If you do not sync in the morning, the data sits on the ring. Sync within the first 30 minutes of waking for best results.
-
Check whether a 'Rest' session (as opposed to 'Sleep') was logged — look in the Activity tab.
Very short sleep periods (under 3 hours) or nights where the ring detected minimal sleep staging may be logged as 'Rest' rather than 'Sleep'. Check both the Sleep and Activity sections of the app.
When to Call a Professional
If night data is missing every single night despite wearing the ring and keeping it charged, contact Oura Support — the sensor hardware may need evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I fall asleep without my Oura Ring and put it on later?
The ring will only record data from when you put it on. The earlier portion of your sleep (before the ring was on) cannot be recovered. Your sleep score for that night will be based only on the recorded portion.
Why does Oura sometimes split one night into two sleep sessions?
Oura splits a session when the ring is removed and put back on during the night — for example, if you get up to use the bathroom and left the ring off for 20+ minutes. It can also split sessions if you stay up very late past midnight. You can merge split sessions in the app by tapping the sleep record and selecting 'Merge'.
