Not Charging
Oura Smart Ring
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Oura Ring is not charging, usually because the ring is not seated correctly in the charger, the charging contacts are dirty, or the USB power source is too weak. This is almost always fixable at home without any replacement parts.
Affected Models
- Oura Ring 4
- Oura Ring 3
- Oura Ring 3 Heritage
- Oura Ring 3 Horizon
Common Causes
- Ring is not sitting flat or correctly in the charging cradle
- Dirt, sweat, or lotion on the ring's charging contacts
- USB adapter or cable is not providing enough power
- Charging cradle itself has debris in the contact pins
- Ring battery is deeply discharged and needs extra time to respond
- Faulty or damaged charging cable
How to Fix It
-
Remove the ring from the charger, wait 10 seconds, and reseat it carefully.
The ring must sit flat inside the cradle — the charging contacts on the ring's inner surface must align perfectly with the pins in the cradle. Gently press down until it feels settled.
-
Clean the ring's inner surface and the cradle pins with a dry cotton swab.
Sweat, lotion, and skin oils build up on the charging contacts over time and block the electrical connection. Do not use water or cleaning fluids directly on the cradle pins.
-
Try a different USB cable and a different USB wall adapter.
Oura recommends using a 5V/1A adapter or higher. Low-power USB ports (such as those on some laptop keyboards or older computers) may not supply enough current to charge the ring.
-
Leave the ring in the cradle for at least 30 minutes even if no charging indicator appears.
A completely drained battery sometimes takes 15–30 minutes before the ring shows any charging sign. Do not give up too soon — just leave it connected and check back later.
-
Check the Oura app — open it while the ring is in the cradle and look for a charging animation on the ring icon.
The app will show a lightning bolt or charging animation when the ring is charging correctly. If the app shows the ring as 'disconnected', the ring is not getting power.
-
Restart the charging process: remove the ring, unplug the USB cable from the wall, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the cable, then reseat the ring.
Power-cycling the charger clears any stuck state in the charging circuit.
When to Call a Professional
If the ring still will not charge after trying a different cable, adapter, and cleaning the contacts, contact Oura Support at ouraring.com/contact. If your ring is under warranty (2 years for Ring 4, 1 year for Ring 3), Oura will replace it at no charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to fully charge an Oura Ring?
A fully depleted Oura Ring takes about 20–80 minutes to charge completely, depending on the model. The Oura Ring 4 charges faster than Ring 3. A full charge gives roughly 5–8 days of battery life under normal use.
Why does my Oura Ring not show a charging light?
The Oura Ring does not have an LED indicator — it shows charging status only through the Oura app. Open the app with the ring in the cradle and look for the charging animation next to the ring icon. If you do not see it, the ring is not making a good electrical connection with the cradle.
