Not Syncing

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Oura Ring is not sending its data to the app, usually because Bluetooth is off, the app is in the background on a restricted phone, or the ring needs a restart. This almost always fixes itself within a few minutes once you identify the cause.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring 4
  • Oura Ring 3
  • Oura Ring 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring 3 Horizon

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth is disabled on the phone
  • The Oura app does not have permission to run in the background
  • Phone battery-saving mode is blocking Bluetooth apps
  • Ring firmware needs an update
  • The app or ring is stuck and needs a restart
  • Ring is out of Bluetooth range for an extended period

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Oura app and pull down on the screen to force a manual sync.

On the Today or Home tab, swipe downward to trigger an immediate sync. Keep the phone within 1 metre of the ring during this step.

  2. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on — check your phone's quick settings panel.

The Oura Ring communicates exclusively via Bluetooth. Even toggling Bluetooth off for 2 seconds and back on can resolve a stuck connection.

  3. Turn off Battery Saver or Low Power Mode on your phone.

Battery optimization settings on Android and Low Power Mode on iPhone restrict background Bluetooth activity, which is how the ring syncs silently throughout the day.

  4. Force-close the Oura app completely and reopen it.

On iPhone, swipe the app card away. On Android, go to App Info > Force Stop. Reopening triggers a fresh connection attempt.

  5. Restart your phone.

A phone restart clears any stuck Bluetooth service processes. After restarting, open the Oura app and wait up to 2 minutes for syncing to begin.

  6. Check that the Oura app has background app refresh permission (iPhone: Settings > Oura > Background App Refresh; Android: Settings > Apps > Oura > Battery > Allow background activity).

Without this permission, the app can only sync when you are actively using it.

When to Call a Professional

If syncing fails consistently across multiple days and all troubleshooting steps have been tried, contact Oura Support at ouraring.com/contact. Provide your account email and the approximate date range of missing data — Oura support can sometimes recover data from the ring's internal storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Oura Ring sync automatically?

The Oura Ring syncs automatically in the background whenever your phone is nearby with Bluetooth on. During sleep, it stores data internally and syncs when you wake up and open the app. If you have not been near your phone for a while, open the app manually to trigger a sync.

Will I lose my data if syncing is delayed?

No — the Oura Ring stores several days of raw data internally. As long as you sync within a few days, no data is lost. Once syncing is restored, all the missed days will appear in the app.
