Ring Not Recognized
Oura Smart Ring
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If the Oura app does not recognize your ring, it is usually a Bluetooth discovery issue or the ring needs to be placed on the charger briefly to wake up its radio. This is different from a pairing failure — even already-paired rings can temporarily become undetected.
Affected Models
- Oura Ring 4
- Oura Ring 3
- Oura Ring 3 Heritage
- Oura Ring 3 Horizon
Common Causes
- Ring Bluetooth radio is in a sleep state and needs to be woken
- App Bluetooth scan has timed out or crashed
- Phone Bluetooth service is in a stuck state
- Ring firmware crashed or froze
- Another app on the phone grabbed exclusive Bluetooth access
How to Fix It
-
Place the ring on the charging cradle for 15 seconds, then remove it and immediately open the Oura app.
Removing from the charger wakes the ring's Bluetooth radio and puts it in an active broadcast state. The app can usually detect it within seconds.
-
Toggle your phone's Bluetooth off and back on.
This resets the Bluetooth scan cache and often immediately reveals devices that were previously not showing up.
-
Force-close and reopen the Oura app.
A crashed Bluetooth scan within the app will not recover on its own. Closing and reopening starts a fresh scan.
-
Restart your phone completely.
A full restart clears all Bluetooth service state and is the most reliable way to resolve persistent detection failures.
-
Make sure no other Bluetooth device or app has connected to the ring.
If you have another phone or tablet nearby that was previously paired to the ring, it may have grabbed the Bluetooth connection. Turn off Bluetooth on all other nearby devices and try again.
When to Call a Professional
If the ring is completely invisible to all Bluetooth scanning tools after all troubleshooting, it may have a hardware fault. Contact Oura Support with your ring serial number (found on the original packaging or your Oura account page).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Oura Ring is completely dead or just not connecting?
Place the ring on the charging cradle. If the ring is functioning, the Oura app will detect it within the charger even if it cannot connect normally. If nothing happens in the app even with the ring on the charger, the ring battery may be fully depleted — leave it charging for 30 minutes and try again.
Will I lose my data if my ring becomes unrecognized?
No — your data is stored on Oura's cloud servers. Even if the ring becomes temporarily unrecognized, once the connection is restored, your data will sync normally. A connection issue does not erase any stored data.
