Stress Not Showing

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Oura Daytime Stress tracking requires the ring to be worn during the day and the feature to be enabled in the app. It also needs several weeks of baseline data. If it is not showing, enable it in Explore and wear the ring consistently.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring 4
  • Oura Ring 3
  • Oura Ring 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring 3 Horizon

Common Causes

  • Daytime Stress feature not enabled in the Oura app
  • Insufficient daytime wear — ring must be worn during the day, not just at night
  • Not enough baseline data collected yet
  • Oura Ring 3 membership lapsed — Daytime Stress is a premium feature
  • App not synced during the day to collect ongoing readings

How to Fix It

  1. Enable Daytime Stress in the Oura app: go to Explore > Daytime Stress and turn it on.

Daytime Stress tracking is not enabled by default. It must be turned on manually and requires you to have completed the initial app setup.

  2. Wear the ring during the day, not just at night.

Daytime Stress is calculated from continuous daytime heart rate variability (HRV) measurements. If you only wear the ring during sleep, there is no daytime data to analyze.

  3. Sync the Oura app at least once during the day, not only in the morning.

Stress scores build throughout the day as more data is collected. Opening and syncing the app in the afternoon gives you a midday stress reading rather than waiting until the next morning.

  4. Build at least 2 weeks of daytime wear history before expecting reliable stress readings.

Like all Oura scores, Daytime Stress is compared to your personal baseline. Without enough daytime HRV history, the system cannot identify what is stressful versus normal for you.

  5. Verify your Oura membership is active if using Ring 3.

Daytime Stress is a premium feature on Ring 3. Ring 4 users get it included. Check your membership status under Profile > Account > Membership.

When to Call a Professional

Oura Stress tracking is a wellness feature, not a medical tool. If you are experiencing significant stress, anxiety, or burnout symptoms, speak with a healthcare provider or mental health professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Oura measure stress without a cortisol test?

Oura uses heart rate variability (HRV) as a proxy for stress. High stress (physical or mental) causes the nervous system to suppress HRV — the variation between heartbeats decreases. Oura detects this drop and interprets it as a stress signal. This is a physiological measurement, not a psychological questionnaire.

Can Oura tell the difference between physical and mental stress?

Not precisely — the ring measures physiological stress responses, which look similar whether caused by a hard workout, a difficult meeting, or illness. Oura attempts to separate out exercise-related stress using the activity data, but perfect separation is not possible with current sensor technology.
