Temperature Sensor Not Working

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Body temperature is only measured during sleep, and only after 2+ weeks of wear to establish your baseline. If you are new to Oura or have not worn it nightly, temperature data will not appear yet — this is expected behavior, not a malfunction.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring 4
  • Oura Ring 3
  • Oura Ring 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring 3 Horizon

Common Causes

  • Not enough baseline data yet — needs 2+ weeks of nightly wear
  • Ring not worn during sleep — temperature is only measured at night
  • Ring is too loose, causing poor thermal contact with the skin
  • Cold sleep environment affecting peripheral temperature readings
  • Oura Ring 3 membership lapsed — temperature trend requires active membership

How to Fix It

  1. Wear the ring every single night for at least 2 weeks.

Oura measures your skin temperature relative deviation — it shows how much your temperature differs from YOUR personal baseline. Without 2 weeks of data, there is no baseline to compare against, so no temperature graph appears.

  2. Ensure the ring fits snugly so the temperature sensor stays in contact with your skin all night.

The temperature sensor is on the inner surface of the ring. A loose ring creates air gaps that completely break the thermal measurement.

  3. Check that you are looking at temperature in the correct place in the app — Home > Today > Body Temperature.

Oura shows temperature as a deviation from baseline (e.g., +0.3°C or -0.1°C), not as an absolute reading like 36.8°C. New users sometimes look for an absolute reading that does not exist.

  4. Verify your Oura membership is active if you use Ring 3.

Temperature trend is a premium feature on Ring 3, requiring an active subscription. Without it, the temperature section may show but with restricted access.

When to Call a Professional

If you have a medical reason to monitor body temperature precisely (e.g., illness, fertility tracking for medical purposes), do not rely on a consumer smart ring. Use a clinical thermometer and consult your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Oura Ring show my actual body temperature?

No — Oura does not show an absolute temperature like a thermometer. It shows a deviation from your personal baseline (for example, +0.4°C above normal). This approach filters out differences caused by room temperature and focuses on genuine body temperature changes.

Can Oura Ring detect fever?

Oura can flag nights where your skin temperature deviation is significantly higher than your baseline, which may correspond with a fever. However, it is not medically validated for fever detection. If you feel sick, use a clinical thermometer for an accurate temperature reading.
