Bluetooth Not Connecting
Amazon Echo Smart Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Amazon Echo Bluetooth pairing issues are usually caused by the paired device being out of range, a stale pairing entry, or too many saved Bluetooth devices. Clear the pairing on both devices and pair again fresh.
Affected Models
- Amazon Echo (all generations)
- Echo Dot (all generations)
- Echo Plus
- Echo Studio
Common Causes
- Paired device out of Bluetooth range — typically 10 metres
- Stale or corrupted Bluetooth pairing entry
- Too many saved Bluetooth devices on the Echo
- Paired device Bluetooth turned off or in airplane mode
- Echo requires a restart to re-establish connection
How to Fix It
-
Make sure the Bluetooth device is within 10 metres and its Bluetooth is turned on.
Echo Bluetooth range is roughly 10 metres in open air — walls and other electronics reduce this significantly.
-
Say 'Alexa, connect to [device name]' to trigger a reconnection.
Previously paired devices can be reconnected by voice without going through the full pairing process again.
-
If that fails, say 'Alexa, forget [device name]' and pair it again.
A stale pairing entry often prevents reconnection. Forgetting the device and pairing fresh resolves most Bluetooth issues.
-
Put the Bluetooth device in pairing mode, then say 'Alexa, pair Bluetooth'.
For a fresh pairing, both devices must be in pairing mode simultaneously. Put the external device in pairing mode first, then ask Alexa to pair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Echo keep disconnecting from Bluetooth?
Frequent disconnection is usually caused by the device being at the edge of Bluetooth range, or by the speaker auto-powering off when idle. Check the speaker's auto-off setting and move it closer to the Echo.
Can Echo connect to multiple Bluetooth devices at once?
No — Echo connects to one Bluetooth audio device at a time. It can remember multiple paired devices and switch between them, but only outputs audio to one at a time.
