Calling Not Working

Amazon Echo Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Amazon Echo calling not working is usually caused by the Alexa app not having calling enabled, the contact not being set up for Alexa calling, or the Echo not connected to Wi-Fi. Open the Alexa app and go to Communicate to verify calling is set up.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Amazon Echo Show
  • Amazon Echo Pop
  • All Amazon Echo models with calling

Common Causes

  • Alexa calling not set up in the Alexa app — first-time setup requires enabling it in the Communicate tab
  • Contact does not have Alexa calling enabled — both caller and recipient need the Alexa app
  • Echo not connected to Wi-Fi — calling requires an active internet connection
  • Alexa app notifications disabled — incoming calls are not announced
  • Do Not Disturb mode enabled — blocks all incoming calls

How to Fix It

  1. Verify Alexa calling is set up in the app.

Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap the speech bubble (Communicate) icon at the bottom. If prompted to set up calling, follow the on-screen steps — you need to verify your phone number. Calling requires your Amazon account to have calling enabled and your phone number verified.

  2. Check that both parties have Alexa calling.

Alexa-to-Alexa calls only work when both the caller and recipient have Alexa calling enabled in the Alexa app. If calling a mobile number (not an Alexa device), ensure you have an Alexa calling-supported region — not all countries support outbound calling to phone numbers. Check the Contacts tab in Alexa app to see if the contact shows a calling icon.

  3. Check Wi-Fi connection.

Say 'Alexa, what's my Wi-Fi status?' or check the Alexa app under Devices → your Echo device. If the Echo is offline, reconnect it to Wi-Fi through the Alexa app Device Settings. Calling requires a stable internet connection — a weak Wi-Fi signal causes dropped calls.

  4. Disable Do Not Disturb on the Echo.

Say 'Alexa, turn off Do Not Disturb' or open the Alexa app → Devices → your Echo → Do Not Disturb and toggle it off. Do Not Disturb blocks all incoming calls and drop-ins. Check whether a scheduled Do Not Disturb window is active — it can silently block calls at certain times of day.

  5. Force-close and reopen the Alexa app.

On your phone, force-close the Alexa app entirely and relaunch it. Sign out and sign back in if the problem persists. Also try restarting the Echo by unplugging it for 30 seconds — a fresh connection to the Alexa cloud often resolves calling issues.

When to Call a Professional

Alexa calling is a cloud-dependent feature. If calling fails after verifying setup and internet connection, contact Amazon customer support — the issue may be account-level.
