Music Stopping Randomly

Amazon Echo Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Alexa music stopping randomly is usually caused by a sleep timer that was set accidentally, a Wi-Fi connection dropping mid-stream, or an Amazon Music free-tier hour limit being reached. Say 'Alexa, cancel the sleep timer' first to rule out the most common cause.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Amazon Echo Pop
  • Amazon Echo Show
  • Amazon Echo Studio
  • All Amazon Echo models

Common Causes

  • Sleep timer set — Alexa stops all audio when the timer expires
  • Amazon Music free tier interrupting with ads or hitting a listening limit
  • Wi-Fi signal dropping briefly and causing the stream to stop
  • Alexa hearing a voice command (hers or someone else's) that paused playback
  • Multi-room music group issue — one speaker losing sync pauses the whole group

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel any active sleep timer.

Say 'Alexa, cancel the sleep timer.' A sleep timer stops all audio when it expires and is often set accidentally by saying phrases like 'Alexa, sleep in 30 minutes.' Also say 'Alexa, what timers are set?' to see all active timers.

  2. Check your Amazon Music subscription.

Amazon Music free tier limits the number of hours per month and may stop playback after the limit is reached. Sign in to music.amazon.com and check your subscription status. An Amazon Music Unlimited subscription removes these limits.

  3. Test Wi-Fi signal strength near the Echo.

Move the Echo closer to the router temporarily and test whether music still stops. If music plays continuously near the router, the original location has weak Wi-Fi. Consider a Wi-Fi extender or moving the router for better coverage.

  4. Check for accidental voice commands.

Background conversations can contain phrases that Alexa mishears as commands (e.g., 'pause' in a TV show dialogue). Move the Echo away from speakers or TVs playing audio. You can review Alexa's recent activity in the Alexa app > Activity to see what commands it heard.

  5. Restart the Echo.

Unplug the Echo from power for 30 seconds and plug back in. A memory issue in the streaming buffer can cause random stops. After restart, test with continuous music for 30 minutes to confirm the problem is resolved.
