Not Connecting to Wi-Fi
Amazon Echo Smart Speaker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Amazon Echo cannot connect to your Wi-Fi network. This is shown by an orange spinning ring. The most common causes are a changed Wi-Fi password, the Echo being moved out of range, or the router needing a restart.
Affected Models
- Amazon Echo (4th Gen)
- Amazon Echo (3rd Gen)
- Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)
- Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen)
- Amazon Echo Show 8
Common Causes
- Wi-Fi password was changed and Echo still has the old one
- Echo moved out of Wi-Fi range
- Router needs a restart
- Router uses 5 GHz only — Echo needs 2.4 GHz
- Too many devices on the network causing connection drops
How to Fix It
-
Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then wait 2 minutes for it to fully reconnect.
A simple router restart fixes Echo Wi-Fi disconnections in the majority of cases.
-
In the Alexa app go to Devices, select your Echo, then Change Wi-Fi to update the password.
If you recently changed your Wi-Fi password, the Echo still has the old one. Updating it in the app reconnects it without a reset.
-
Move the Echo closer to the router to test — within 10 feet.
If connection works close to the router but not in the intended location, the Wi-Fi signal is too weak there.
-
Ensure your router broadcasts a 2.4 GHz network — Echo devices do not support 5 GHz only.
If your router is set to 5 GHz only mode, the Echo cannot connect. Enable 2.4 GHz in your router settings.
-
If nothing works, reset the Echo and set it up again: hold the Action button for 20 seconds.
A factory reset clears all Wi-Fi settings and lets you start fresh. You will need the Alexa app to set it up again.
When to Call a Professional
Wi-Fi connection issues are configuration problems, not hardware failures. If the Echo cannot connect on any network with any router, the Wi-Fi chip may be faulty — contact Amazon support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Echo keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?
Frequent disconnections are usually caused by a weak Wi-Fi signal, router channel congestion, or an overloaded router. Try moving the Echo closer to the router or use a Wi-Fi extender. A router restart often solves ongoing disconnection issues.
Does Amazon Echo work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Most Echo devices support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. However, if your router broadcasts separate network names for each band, make sure you connect the Echo to the correct one. Older Echo models (1st and 2nd gen) only support 2.4 GHz.
