Not Playing Music

Amazon Echo Smart Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Alexa acknowledges your request but no music plays, or music stops immediately after starting. This is usually caused by a music service not being linked in the Alexa app, the default music service not being set, or a free account limitation. Checking your music service settings in the Alexa app fixes most cases.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Echo (4th Gen)
  • Amazon Echo (3rd Gen)
  • Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)
  • Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen)
  • Amazon Echo Show 8

Common Causes

  • Music service (Spotify, Amazon Music, etc.) not linked in Alexa app
  • No default music service set in Alexa app
  • Free Spotify account — Alexa requires Spotify Premium
  • Music service app needs re-linking due to password change
  • Wi-Fi connection too slow for streaming

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Alexa app, go to Settings > Music & Podcasts and check your linked services.

If no music service is linked, Alexa has nowhere to play music from. Add Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, or another service.

  2. Set a default music service in the Alexa app under Settings > Music & Podcasts > Default Services.

Without a default service, Alexa does not know which service to use and may fail silently.

  3. If you use Spotify, make sure you have a Spotify Premium account — Alexa does not work with the free tier.

Alexa requires Spotify Premium for voice-controlled playback. The free Spotify tier does not support Alexa integration.

  4. Unlink and relink your music service in the Alexa app if you recently changed your streaming service password.

Go to Settings > Music > tap the service > Disable Skill, then re-enable and log in again with the new password.

When to Call a Professional

Music playback issues are account and settings problems, not hardware faults. If music plays fine from one service but not another, the issue is with that service account, not the Echo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Alexa say she cannot find the song I asked for?

Alexa searches your default music service for the song. If the song is not available on that service, she will say she cannot find it. Try asking for the song on a specific service: say Play [song] on Spotify or Play [song] on Amazon Music.

Can I use Alexa to play music for free?

Yes — Amazon Music has a free tier that works with Alexa, though it has shuffle limitations. Amazon Prime members get a larger free music library through Prime Music. For unlimited on-demand playback, Amazon Music Unlimited or Spotify Premium is needed.
