Routines Not Working

Amazon Smart Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Alexa Routines stop working when the routine is disabled, a connected smart home device has gone offline, or the Echo lost its internet connection. Open the Alexa app, check the routine is enabled, and verify connected devices are online.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Echo Plus
  • Amazon Echo Show
  • Amazon Echo Studio

Common Causes

  • Routine accidentally disabled in the Alexa app
  • Schedule timezone mismatch — routine fires at the wrong time
  • A smart home device in the routine is offline or unresponsive
  • Echo is offline when the routine is scheduled to run
  • Voice-triggered routine phrase not matching what you actually say
  • Alexa app needs updating

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Alexa app, go to More > Routines, and confirm the routine is toggled on.

Routines have an on/off toggle next to their name. It is easy to accidentally disable one. Make sure the toggle is blue (on).

  2. Check the routine schedule timezone.

Go to the Alexa app > More > Settings > Device Settings > select your Echo > Time Zone. If the timezone is wrong, a 7am routine may actually be set to run at 4am or 10am local time.

  3. Test each action in the routine individually.

If a routine turns on a smart bulb, try asking Alexa to turn on that bulb directly. If that fails, the problem is with the device — fix the individual device, and the routine will work again.

  4. Delete the routine and recreate it.

Routines can become corrupted, especially after app updates. Deleting and rebuilding a routine from scratch fixes most persistent routine failures.

  5. Update the Alexa app on your phone.

Go to the app store, search for Amazon Alexa, and install any pending update. Outdated app versions sometimes lose the ability to sync routine changes to Echo devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Alexa routine run at the wrong time?

This is almost always a timezone issue. Check the timezone setting on your Echo device in the Alexa app (Device Settings > select Echo > Time Zone) and correct it.

Can an Alexa routine run on multiple Echo devices?

Yes. When creating a routine, the When field lets you choose which Echo triggers it (voice command) and the Add Action section lets you specify which device responds. You can target All Devices or a specific Echo.
