Timer Not Working
Amazon Echo Smart Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Amazon Echo timer not going off is most often caused by Do Not Disturb mode silencing the alert or the Echo volume set to zero at the time the timer fires. Check Do Not Disturb first — it silences timers on most Echo models.
Affected Models
- Amazon Echo
- Amazon Echo Dot
- Amazon Echo Pop
- Amazon Echo Show
- All Amazon Echo models
Common Causes
- Do Not Disturb mode enabled — silences timers on most Echo firmware versions
- Echo volume at zero when the timer fires — timer sounds silently
- Timer set on a different Echo device — timer fires on the device where it was set, not all devices
- Wi-Fi outage preventing Alexa from receiving the timer trigger from the cloud
- Alexa misheard the timer duration — said '15 minutes' but Alexa set '50 minutes'
How to Fix It
-
Check Do Not Disturb mode.
Say 'Alexa, turn off Do Not Disturb' and then re-set your timer. Or open the Alexa app → Devices → your Echo → Do Not Disturb and confirm it is off. Do Not Disturb overrides timers and alarms on many Echo firmware versions — it is the most common cause of silent timers.
-
Check the Echo volume before the timer fires.
Set the volume to at least 3–5 with 'Alexa, set volume to 5' before setting a timer. If the volume is at zero when the timer fires, the alert plays silently. Note that the microphone mute button (red ring) does not silence timers — only the volume level does.
-
Confirm which device has the timer.
Say 'Alexa, show my timers' to check all active timers. Timers are set on the specific Echo you spoke to — they fire on that device only, not all Echo devices. If you set a timer in the kitchen but are in the bedroom, you may not hear it fire.
-
Check your Alexa app Activity log.
Open the Alexa app → More → Activity and review what Alexa heard when you set the timer. If Alexa misheard '15 minutes' as '50 minutes', you will see the misheard command in the Activity log. Speak the timer command slowly and clearly: 'Alexa, set a timer for fifteen minutes.'
-
Restart the Echo.
Unplug the Echo for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for it to reconnect to Wi-Fi before setting a new timer. A cloud sync issue occasionally prevents timers from registering — a restart clears this. If restarts do not help, go to Alexa app → Devices → your Echo → Factory Reset.
When to Call a Professional
Timers are a basic Alexa cloud feature. If timers consistently fail to fire after checking all settings, perform a factory reset of the Echo. If the problem continues, contact Amazon support.
