Two Devices Activating

Amazon Echo Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Two Echo devices responding at once means Alexa ESP (Echo Spatial Perception) is not working correctly — ESP normally makes only the closest Echo respond to a command. Ensure all Echo devices are updated to the latest firmware and that ESP is enabled in the Alexa app.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Amazon Echo Pop
  • Amazon Echo Show
  • All multi-device Echo setups

Common Causes

  • Echo devices running outdated firmware that predates ESP support
  • ESP disabled or malfunctioning after a firmware update
  • Devices placed too close together — ESP works better with at least 5 meters between devices
  • One Echo set to a different wake word than the others — responds when it shouldn't
  • Devices in the same physical room with similar audio pickup patterns

How to Fix It

  1. Check and enable Alexa ESP.

Open the Alexa app > Devices, select each Echo > Device Settings. Look for 'Echo Spatial Perception' or 'ESP' and confirm it is enabled. ESP causes the Echo closest to the speaker's voice to respond and suppresses the others.

  2. Update all Echo devices.

Go to the Alexa app > Devices, tap each Echo, and check for pending updates. Older firmware does not support ESP. Ensure all devices in your home are on the latest firmware version.

  3. Increase physical distance between devices.

ESP works better when devices are at least 5 meters apart. If two Echos are in the same small room, they may both trigger even with ESP active. Consider moving one device to a different room.

  4. Assign a different wake word to one device.

Open the Alexa app > Devices > select one Echo > Wake Word. Change one device's wake word (e.g., 'Amazon', 'Echo', 'Computer', or 'Ziggy') to reduce cross-activation. Only the device with the matching wake word will respond to that trigger phrase.

  5. Restart all Echo devices.

Unplug all Echo devices from power simultaneously. Wait 30 seconds, then plug them all back in. After they reconnect to Wi-Fi, ESP coordination between devices is re-initialized.

When to Call a Professional

If ESP is confirmed enabled, devices are updated, and they are still interfering, contact Amazon support — this may be a configuration issue with your Alexa account.
